    Another 50kg monster

Went again to the deep grounds 60km out in 500m off the Southport Seaway and picked this guy on the bottom .We were using electric reels. The fish is a Hapuka and the reason the eyes are popped out is because they have been brought up from so deep ......... a severe case of the bends.

Are you sure there wasn't some attractive women on the boat. Think my eyes have probably looked something like that once or twice in the past year. Good thing the medical profession of eye surgery has come a long way in the last few years...
Sensational fish, congratulations! From the look of it, that one belonged to the fillet and release club...

    Re: Another 50kg monster

Yes the fish fight..... we use bent butt game roads and the aftco bent butts are bending under the stress , last trip we tore out a rod hodler from my 2" thick gunnel

Once the fish hit the 100m mark thats when they let go and blow up and because of this no fish can be released.

Paul Burt is doing an article in the Gold Coast Bulletin this weekend about deep drop fishing for those who want more info on it.

For those who are interested Paul Burt's Article is the the "Paradise Magazine" lift out of the this weeks (26,27th Nov) Gold Coast Bulletin page 30 it's good read about deep drop fishing .

The fish he is holding is a Big Eye Trevalla not a Harpuka (miss print) these fish have a lens in their eye about 40mm in dia they are huge.

The flesh is very white almost translucant they have a high oil content but they taste great you just have to be careful not to over cook it.

WELL DONEGUYS, you must feel very proud of your electric winch & the fish that IT catches, so much more of an achievement if you gave battle with your own muscles, have you ever tried? I fish for cod too, but with rod & reel, determination & lots of pain, takes 1/2 an hour to get an average one up, have seen my mate dragged around the deck by a big one, sorry guys but i think powered winches should br banned for all but the severly disabled who wish to fish ,is this a sport or just butcher work, just my opinion, muzz.
this one on the bigger side of average, by a few kilos

not a bad fish guys used to chase them down at port macquarie . i agree with onerabbit ,i used to use a shimano 2speed and have 3 hooks on or a deck winch with 3 hooks .used to get blue eye or cod as well bring 3 up at a time was a lot of fun .and the average size was about 10 to 15 kg of each fish.
