    Real Big Fish

Picked this guy up in 500m of water off the Gold Coast last week we were using electric reels with 10lb leads.

4-1/2 mins to get down to the bottom about 15mins to get up.

They look ugly but they taste great.

great fish. I didn't know they were as high up as the coast. How far out would this have been?
    Again, nice fish mate.
    Cheers, Mark.

It looks like an awesome kinda fishing.

Rob, do you think there is any hope in trying with a chair 80 off moreton at around the 300m mark? I realise it would be one hell of a wind up, but is it practical?

Do you pour your own lead or use window weights? Also, what bait have you found to be best?

    soo much thinking!

    Re: Real Big Fish

I started pouring my own lead in 40 dia tubes at 300mm long apx 7 pound , but you do loose a few sinkers so now I just buy scrap steel 40 dia about 500mm long around 10 pound , as the current has picked up now.

Be prepared to loose lots of gear if you try this fishing , the rewards are great but the looses can be very expensive when you have bust offs of 500m + of 130lb braid , the sinker , a wind-on lead , heavy duty snap swivel , no to mention the rig with 6- 14/0 circle hooks . a single bust off can be around $300.

what a great fish , just said it all on a different spot, why not have a go without your 'electric reel' & see how you go, are you a fisherman , a sportsman , or a butcher, i think they should all be banned, muzz.

hey magic pudding, just said it in a different spot, but how can you call yourself a sportsman with an electric reel, I cant even see a handle to turn, we fish for hapuka & bar cod in 250mtrs+ with rod & reel, takes 20mins winding just to bring your sinker up with no fish, at least 30 with an average fish, ( not mean to aim that at you), we often let go of 500mtrs to stay with the bottom, but with the determination all fishermen possess, is ok, when you know you have a good cod on , you hang on, i have to wear a harness, i think some times i should tie a rope to the back, bottom line , is quite acheivable with rod & reel, just takes...........................a good jock( or arse ) strap. have shown this b4 , but what the hell, will scan more soon, muzz.
