Just thought I'd check in to let you know whats happening over here in the West, well, the metro area anyway. Lately theres been lots of big samsonfish coming from shallow water on light gear with Pink Snapper and Skippy being great bycatches. Most of the salmon have moved through and some great spanish macks upto 55 pound were caught at Rottnest. Anyway, sure your all bored by now, heres a few happy snaps - this one was taken in 15m of water on 20 pound braid.
I am planning a trip down to albany next feburary and i was looking for good places to do some rock fishing and beach fishing. What are the main targets off the rocks and beaches around this time. and what sort of gear would i need to be using.
Thanx for any help and who ever else on this site would know much about this area.
MICK
i used to use an alvey 650c, platapus pretest, good for the abrazion from the rocks,
live herring under a balloon works best,
try the rocks near THE GAP, BLOWHOLES most rocks out towards Torrinderup National Park produce big fish.... Yellowtail King Fish, Samson fish,
in feb, you could have a shot at Bluefin if your lucky,
burley up, get a burley trail going and you can see the kingies in the trail,
if i was in wa i'd show you my X spot in albany but hard when im in qld,
as for the beaches, Bornholm out near Lowland is good, if you have a NEW 4WD, its a shit of a hill to get back up, sandpatch near the prison produces most days
West Cape Howe is prob best rock and beach spot in albany, its W.A's most southernly point, very deep water
Im actually from Denmark originally but then moved up to the big smoke for career opportunities. Plenty of good fishing down Albany way, we mainly used to go boating but did do some land based at times. Plenty of fish out West Cape Howe way but you need a small swell to get to the ledges.
Heres a mackie we picked up last Thursday in Exmouth.
Oh yeh Mickeddy, I run a WA fishing website, if you want a few more responses about Albany fishing join up and ask, plenty of locals from down that way. fishwrecked.com is the address.
What would u use in the burley of the rocks and how do u dispense it.
Also how heavy should the line be? is 30lb braid ok or do i need heavier.
THanx

Chook pellets are a really good burley, easy to throw and get good distance and dispersion. Otherwise a burley bomb under a float is good to catch herring for your live bait. Personally I don't like using braid off the rocks as it pings too easily and would go for the mono line - for your live baits and free floaters. Fishing for bottom species I would still go mono as you'll know when your on and you don't need as much sensitivity. Anywhere between 30-50 pound is good for the sambo's, snapper, mulloway off the beaches. Go lighter than that if you come during salmon season and want some fun, also for tarwhine and king george.
