what settings must i change to get a note when someone replies to a post rather than trying to remember it and look for any possible answers thanks marty

You need to use the Reply option, not the Quick Reply Box

When you start a new topic or post a reply using the full reply option you have the option of ticking the Notify of replies: option.

If you just want to watch a topic and be notified if anyone posts a reply you can click on the Notify of replies: link at the bottom of the post on the right hand side. Once you have one or more posts you are wanting Notification of replies on you can click on the Notification link located on the top chat board menu and this will give you a list of the topics you have on your notification list. You can remove them from the list at any time.
