    VIRUS- please help

I'm sure there are others who have been affected by this. I was on msn and someone sent me a message somewhere along the lines of "Is this you?" followed by a long url with my email at the end. I, quite stupidly, clicked the link. Since then, msn has been playing up and I have stopped using it except on another computer. My Norton won't work properly and keeps coming up with the auto-protect turned off and email scanning has error. Are any ausfishers able to help me with getting rid of this???? I've been going through stuff on the internet but I can't quite seem to get rid of it. Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thanks fellas.

1-what anti virus are you running? You should be using something like Trend Micro Pc cillin or Nortons. Update the components, and run the program. If you dont have one, then youve just found out why they are nescessary, so buy one.
2- Run Spybot as well, its a good free adware removal. Its not the same as anti virus, but its good anyway. Run a google on spybot and download it.

Rajawolf- had found that one on the net earlier, but I'm running Win 98 and it doesn't seem to cross over as well. I've now gotten rid of most of the virus, it's just my norton that doesn't work properly. It keeps coming up when i restart it with email scanning in error and auto-protect switched off. Thank you for your help though, it is greatly appreciated.

gogecko- I am running Norton and I also scan with ad-Aware SE personal as well. I might try spybot to see if it helps any more. Thanks for your help

Mogwai- Thanks for the link mate, I will give it a go.

Go to housecall, do their free online scan. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ It might take a while to run, grin and bear it, the results are worthwhile. Before you clean the little nasty out, write down all the info the housecall results log will show you onto a sheet of paper. Then ask it to remove anything it found. Google the names of any and all virus\malware it said was on your system and read up about what they do. Sophos and Symantec will usually have good info on their sites for you to use. Download any free tools they might recommend you use, following their instructions to the letter. Boot from safe mode, if they ask you to, or you could find yourself wasting your time. Personally I would uninstall Norton, after downloading the latest AVG free. Update AVG before you use it. Definitely update and run Spybot and ad-aware. Get a firewall on your system, not only do they block unwanted traffic, if you don't go crazy allowing everything that wants to go online, it'll tell you whats trying to get access to the net, giving you warning of anything unusual. Sygate makes a good free firewall. Be thorough about cleaning up, if you are still suspicious, ask more questions, or format the drive and start fresh. Good luck.

    Re: VIRUS- please help

I have had nothing but BAD experiences with Nortons, Ichanged over toi a freebie a few years ago and have NEVER had a problems since.....

I now use AVG free version and it is great....always get them before they get me and it does auto updates as well.......ITS FREE

Then I use Microsft anti spyware downloadable from micrsofts site, its also FREE so all in all two great freebies that actually WORK.

Keep the Adaware going, its also a great freebie....
