'NSW must protect sharks before importing them'
March 15, 2006 - 6:32AM
The NSW government must legislate to protect grey nurse sharks before importing the species to Australia's east coast, the National Parks Association (NPA) says.
Researchers at Sydney's Macquarie University are considering moving sharks from Western Australia or Africa to the eastern seaboard to replenish grey nurse numbers and strengthen the gene pool.
The NPA today said it was a waste of time to import grey nurse sharks to the NSW coast until the government established a marine sanctuary to protect the species, which were being killed due to accidental hooking during fishing activities.
"The NSW government needs to address the root of the problem here before we look elsewhere for solutions," NPA executive officer Andrew Cox said in a statement.
"Imported sharks will only face the same problem with hooking where they aggregate. It'll be like bringing lambs to the slaughter.
"The importing of sharks may assist as a secondary measure but without the NSW government offering our grey nurse sharks sanctuary protection it will be of little use."
Fewer than 500 grey nurse sharks remained along the Australian east coast and the species could become extinct, Mr Cox said.

Feared this was on there agenda. >
Come up with something thats hard to disprove and run without.
I feel another cut coming, pretty deep this one.
Seen good numbers of G.N in non protection zones hope mr co#k sorry cox dosen't find out where, otherwise more scare tactic shutdowns.
Also heard talk about extending existing GN zones to 1.2km. > > >
