Claim Qld Govt ordered shredding of Mary River species studies
An authority on the rare lungfish claims the Beattie Government in Queensland has ordered the shredding of studies into endangered species and other animals in the Mary River.
The Government wants to build a dam at Traveston Crossing near Gympie in the state's south-east but opponents believe it will have a devastating environmental impact.
Dr Jean Joss says she has been told by Department of Primary Industries staff that they have been ordered to shred the reports.
Dr Joss says if the order is carried out then vital evidence supporting a challenge under federal law to the proposed Mary River dam would be lost.
"I was rung specifically and told by an employee of the Department of Primary Industries - not in the local Brisbane district at all, in fact quite a different area of Queensland - he rang me to say that they have been asked to shred any information that the department was holding on endangered species in the Mary River," she said.
The Liberal federal Member for the Sunshine Coast seat of Fairfax says he is very concerned by the claim, and he will be taking it up in Perth this afternoon with the federal Environment Minister.
Alex Somlyay says the State Government could be liable to legal action if the reports are true.
"That absolutely disgusts me," he said.
Mr Somlyay says there are specific requirements under data protection legislation and heavy penalties for non-compliance.
"Now, I'm going to take this up very urgently with Minister Ian Campbell.
"If they have breached the Act I'm going to ensure that the most severe penalties possible are invoked on the State Government
