hi all this letter arrived today from Minster Desley Bolyes office today read into it the Beattie > >government is not going to make any announcement till after the election on Moreton Bay at least the opposition came straight out and stated there stand on the Bay

E/06/03156 Minister for Local Government and Planning
    Minister for Environment
    28 Aug

    Minister for Women
    Mr Steve Gresham

    Dear Mr Gresham

Thank you for your e-mail to the Honourable Desley Boyle MP, Minister for Environment, Local Government, Planning and Women of 17 August 2006 concerning the Moreton Bay Marine Park.

Following the announcement by the Premier of a general election of the Legislative Assembly to be held on 9 September 2006, the Government is in caretaker mode pending the outcome of the election. During the caretaker period, I have been asked to respond to you direct.

In Queensland, our State marine parks are multiple-use areas that focus on conserving ecological systems while allowing people to engage in a wide range of activities, including recreational fishing.

The Minister has publicly stated, through media releases and in response to a question in Parliament, that the Government has not started a review of the Moreton Bay Marine Park nor made any decisions on future zoning. There is no intention to close significant areas of the Bay to recreational fishing.

The review of the Moreton Bay Marine Park will be a detailed process to be commenced in 2007 and finalised by September 2008. When the review does commence, available scientific data will be collated and considered together with local knowledge to determine the specific elements of the marine environment that need protection for their future survival. Allusers of Moreton Bay will be encouraged to participate in the review in what will be an open and transparent process.

The Minister thanks you for bringing this matter to her attention and hopes this information clarifies the situation. Should you have any further enquiries, please contact Julie Northage of the Environmental Protection Agency on telephone 3227 6884.

    Yours sincerely

The letter says that they wil go through the usual process of pretending to take all views on board (after secretly deciding behind closed doors what they are going to do anyway) then manufacture the "spin" to tell everyone how they have balanced the wishes of all stakeholders.

Can't anybody else see it coming????

Re: new letter from minster Bolyes office

A letter i received today from coalition at least where making them aware of our concerns

    THE CHALLENGE THE SOLUTION
    Mr Lawrence Springborg MP
    Leader of The Coalition
    Leader of The Nationals
    Member for Southern Downs
Coalition to stop Labor’s lock out of fishing
    in Moreton Bay.
    Recreational fishing may be
banned in half of Moreton Bay
    under a secret pre-election
    preference deal between the
    Beattie Labor Government and
    the Greens.
    The Australian Marine
    Conservation Society had
launched a campaign to have “at
    least 30-50% of Moreton Bay
    within reserves (protected areas
    closed to all extractive activities)”
as part of the 10-year review of
    the marine park.
    Recreational fishers are gravely
    concerned about the possible
    rezoning of Moreton Bay.
    The Beattie Labor Government
has a track record for shutting
down fishing in Moreton Bay, as
    demonstrated by bans
introduced in four key areas in
    2003, allegedly to protect grey
    nurse sharks
A Coalition Government will listen to and work with commercial
and recreational fishers to achieve equitable outcomes based on
    sound scientific advice.
The Coalition opposes Labor’s plans to shut out recreational
fishermen from up to 50% of Moreton Bay.
A Coalition Government will work with recreational fishermen to
support practical approaches to the sustainable management of
    the bay.
The Coalition recognises that shutting off half of Moreton Bay
will only increase pressure on fish and the eco-system in the
    area which remains open.
The common sense conservation approach of the Coalition will
include consultation with recreational fishermen who support
practical conservation measures in Moreton Bay.
A Coalition Government will adopt practical and necessary
conservation measures but it will not be railroaded into
    unnecessary environmental extremism, which prevents
    recreational enjoyment of our landscape.
    POLICY 044

There will be days when the fishing is better than one's most optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.
