    Government "tried to cover-up evidence"

Laming says State Government "tried to cover-up evidence" on Moreton Bay closures
Written by Liberal Party Media Release
    Monday, 04 September 2006
Andrew Laming, Federal Member for Bowman has revealed today that the Beattie Labor Government has tried to cover-up evidence of proposed closures to Moreton Bay.

For months, the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) have published their wish to see 30-50% of Moreton Bay closed to all extractive activities, including recreational fishing.

However, following recent media coverage and discussions with Labor party heavyweights, the AMCS have pulled the claim from their website.

Furthermore, in a statement at a recent forum, Labor's candidate for Pumicestone (an electorate on the northern end of the Moreton Bay Marine Park), claimed that there was never statement claim made by conservation groups calling for 30-50% closures of Moreton Bay.

She said, "The AMCS are taking a reasonable and balanced view, calling for the establishment of a scientific taskforce."

Mr Laming, Federal Member for Bowman said that the Labor Party is covering up what is clearly an attack on our rights to fish in Moreton Bay.

"The AMCS have been publishing their claim for 30-50% of the Bay to be closed for months and with a few words from their Labor Party bosses, the AMCS have changed their tune.

"But there can be no hiding the real intent of Beattie's Labor Government and their green allies. The Queensland Conservation Council is calling for no take zones over 20-30% of the entire Queensland Coastline. The AMCS are also a signatory to this claim to shut angler out of their local waters.

"Even the Greens in Queensland couldn't help themselves but support the AMCS's bid to have 30-50% of Moreton Bay closed to all extractive activities.

In a Media statement available from the Greens website, they have supported the call from the AMCS to increase the no-take zones to 30-50% of the Bay.

"What's disturbing is that the Greens have done a preference deal with Labor in 13 marginal seats across Queensland, some of which are on or near Moreton Bay," Mr Laming said.

"It's clear that Labor is trying to hide this issue before the election. By instructing AMCS to change their website and covering up their deals with the Greens, they have shown us all exactly what their intentions are with Moreton Bay.

"Beattie's Labor cannot be trusted with Moreton Bay. These cover-ups and secret deals will strengthen the resolve of the Coalition and anglers throughout the Bay region to protect our rights in Moreton Bay," Mr Laming concluded.

There will be days when the fishing is better than one's most optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

DON’T TAKE BAY FISHING BAN BAIT

There would be no mass bans on fishing in Moreton Bay if the Government is re-elected, Premier Peter Beattie and Deputy Premier Anna Bligh declared today.

“The Coalition and other political interests are behind a scare-mongering campaign to deliberately bait fishers,” Mr Beattie said.

“For the Coalition to suggest in a policy document that recreational fishing may be banned in half of Moreton Bay is mischievous and designed to cause maximum concern.

“They are out to hook the naïve and gullible.

“Unfortunately, some fishers have taken the bait and may be unnecessarily concerned about the future.

“There is no plan by my Government to shut out recreational fishers from 50 per cent of Moreton Bay.

“Nor will my Government jeopardise the important commercial fishing and boating industries.”

Ms Bligh said the Moreton Bay Marine Park zoning plan was to be reviewed after 10 years.

“The review is due to be completed in 2008, and hasn’t even started yet,” she said.

”If we are re-elected on September 9, we guarantee that mum and dads, their kids and others will be able to continue to ‘wet a line’ in the Bay.”

Ms Bligh invited all parties to contribute to the review.

“I urge all stakeholders, including the mums and dads who take their kids fishing or boating on the Bay, fishing clubs and commercial fishing interests to get involved,” she said.

“We will involve representatives of all major fishing and boating groups in the development of the review.”

Mr Beattie during the election campaign has announced a policy to hold 100 free fishing clinics for up to 3000 youngsters over the next three years. He also announced a $1.5 million three-year plan to restock dams and other waterways to improve our freshwater fishery.

And he said a re-elected Beattie Government would spend more than $40 million over the next three years building, upgrading and maintaining public boat ramps.

“My Government has a proven track record in looking after people who fish – and we intend to build on that record,” Mr Beattie said.

Re: Government "tried to cover-up evidence"

    Hi all
well once again back-flip Beattie strikes again deals with the greenies and lies to the public will it ever end like one of my signs stated on Saturday for Beattie
    his promises are like termites
    (Vermin) > >

all he teaches our kids is that it is alright to lie to who ever over what ever and yet we already have problems with the generation now what is the next generation going to be like > > > >

i have had some Sh## full E.mails over some of my comment to beattie, but hay they are my points of view and will standby them regardless as all i have told is the truth which is more than i can say for Back-filp Beattie

and for those that do no me i will always teach my children to tell the truth, not to steal, no matter what the consequences are, not that it always works

as my children where growing up i had a sign they read

if you are going to do the crime
then you must be prepared to
    do the time
now remember a lair is as bad
    as a thief
take the first lot of consequences
not the second lot as they are
    move severe
this is the message we should be sending to the government not patting them on the back like good little Doggies

as for the above article it is what i have said on previous posts but like any thing you can lead a horse to water but you can not make it drink

    Cheers

    Hi fishingjew
well mate had to say some thing other than the rest of the boat i am not just looking at our bay but overall Health, Water, Roads, Schools, Education, Youth, as they are our next generation, being taught to lie by leaders, old saying lead by example, where is the leadership here in Labour government, one thing people are forgetting that at one time Back-flip Peter Beattie was a Health Minister and for the last eight yrs they have sent it back wards even further but hay what price do we place on loved ones where health is concerned, when we are drinking Dirt not water, kids being killed on shitful roads, the old family values gone out the window because government is making closures plus many more points of views
you would have also been behind the Peter Collins ute
but i do apologizes for the sore eyes and the burning brain mind was looking at Shane ugly mug for most of the journey just as well i do not suffer from nightmares

Sorry Shane had to get one shot in before you step in to parliament

Re: Government "tried to cover-up evidence"

“My Government has a proven track record in looking after people who fish – and we intend to build on that record,” Mr Beattie said.
When can we laugh?? Here's Beatties Record "looking after us fishos":

    • Closed thousands of Kilometres of Beaches to Fishing in Nth Qld with complimentary zoning. With no compensation to commercial fishos and affected businesses

    • Closed significant landbased fishing spots in the Great Sandys Straits many kilometres of shoreline now closed, as well as areas surrounding certain islands and reefs.

    • Introduced heavy restrictions in the rest of GSS including one rod/hook per angler this affects hundreds of kms of coastline including most of the Fraser coast.

    • Closed an area of 1.2kms around flat rock, Henderson rock, wolf rock and cherubs cave.

    Did I miss anything??

Oh yes - they said that there was "scare mongering" which proved untrue in the great sandy straits, they left 96% open (yeh with one hook per person, rumour has it you cant even have a spare rod pre-rigged and ready to go incase you get a snag and have to bust off - can anyone confirm this?) and they want to do the same here?? NO THANKS!!

All of this was done with little or no consultation (with rec fishers - plenty of consultation with green groups) And now Beattie wants to build on that record??

    NO THANKS!!!

Fisheries minister Henry Palaszczuk even admitted that the "fishing industry has been screwed enough and it's time we took a step back" (Queensland Fisherman, January 2005).

But have they stepped back? - NO they've stepped up their campaign of closures and lockouts. THIS is your record of looking after people that fish...and you want to build on that Peter? - hope you're proud of it.... we arent!!!

    On Saturday tell Beattie....
    NO THANKS!!

Re: Government "tried to cover-up evidence"

Dont know if anyone else has read this but it shows what where dealing with dont trust the Beattie government even the greens get stung! Of course this was denied by him and said it was scare tactics alot of that going around at the moment!

Greens outraged at Lungfish Report Destruction

25 Aug 2006 - The Greens today expressed outrage at reports the Beattie government had ordered the shredding of studies into the lungfish and other endangered species in the Mary River.

The proposed Traveston Dam on the Mary River is likely to have a heavy impact on endangered species like the lungfish, the Mary River cod, the Mary River turtle and the giant barred frog. This could cause the dam to be scrapped under Commonwealth environmental legislation.

One of the world’s foremost authorities on the lungfish, Dr Jean Joss, has stated publicly that she has been told by a Department of Primary Industries officer that they have been ordered to shred the report.

Queensland Greens lead spokesperson Juanita Wheeler said she was shocked at this report and said it was potentially an illegal order under the Commonwealth Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

“Dr Joss is an eminent scientist and would not be making such a statement if she wasn’t sure of her facts,” Ms Wheeler said.

“The CMC should investigate this immediately. The Beattie government has a long record of avoiding giving information to the public but this goes way beyond that.”

The last major shredding incident in Queensland was the shredding of documents from the Heiner inquiry in the early years of the Goss government, an act which is still having reverberations in Queensland political life.

Ms Wheeler will be at the site of the proposed Traveston Dam today.

Re: Government "tried to cover-up evidence"

I have to agree, Beattie and his pack are liars, cheats and charletans, no wonder he had to change the law to make it legal to lie in parliament.
What amazes me is the way it all slides off him. The "Teflon Pete" monika is so true!!!

This guy is unbeleiveable in his complete lack of integrity yet he keeps coming up roses.

It might seem strange but I regard the Greens as more of an "honourable enemy" even though I disagree with them, at least they openly stand up for their point of view, not sneak around in backroom deals while making 'open to interpretation' statements in public.

I actually like and agree with the preferential voting system and disagree with the "optional preferential" scam that Beattie introduced but it gives me one opportunity. This Saturday I can legally not give him my vote at all. What I mean is I can leave the ALP box blank, saying that I would rather after all the other preferences my vote expired than vote for Beattie.

Re: Government "tried to cover-up evidence"

AMCS have not yet decided what to do,since they have no detailed maps of what or where to close, nor which part of the Bay will possibly be closed. Beattie has not yet decided what to do.
Springborg will do ANYTHING to pry a few votes from LABOR.
BUT. when there has been no consultation between AMCS and the Beattie government, not even a study by the scientific minds who sometimes have a hand in what will happen, then nothing WILL happen.
Springborgs web site had a statement that under HIS government, NO PARTS of the bay would be closed. TWO WEEKS BEFORE the protest by us.
I wrote to AMCS, Beattie, and Springborg, Beattie and AMCS replied that no closures would be forthcoming , not until after an exhaustive study is carried out as to which areas MAY be protected.
It was all a scam by Springborg, who leaked lies to the press and then had a reply already aet up to grab a few votes.
The protest WAS organised by MBAA, Moreton Bay Action Alliance.
We were all just prawns in their scheme.
After finding out ALL of this info, I went fishing on the day everyone else went for a long fruitless waste of time, money and petrol.

Re: Government "tried to cover-up evidence"

    Hi IAN R BELL
well mate hate to be the bringer of bad news but i suppose that every thing we have posted over the last 2-3wks where just shear B>S from all Parties including the facts that the Greenies even let the cat out of the bag in last Saturdays Courier Mail (yes the Media maybe full it)

Question which of beatties offices do you work from >

secondly this has been going on for over the so-called 2 wks you calm

but when you receive the same bit of info from offices you know as well as add up over the last 8yrs of Sh#t from the Labour Party plus the facts in legislation that they can lie to the public with no Accountabilities or creditabilities then you really have to start to look at things in a different outlook

Ian R Bell look at what haas come out over the last 8 yrs lack of Health system, lack of Water infrastructure nearly down to drinking mud money that was to suppose to be spent on roads disappears public housing up the Shit sold of many of the public houses and leaving people in the streets but no accounting for where this money has gone
now if you check the federal grants and budgets the Qld government has had more than it's fair share where has the money gone not into any of the above that is for-shore check the budgets money is handed down but not spent > > > and loved ones have died as a result > >

sorry guys but the lack of intestinal-fortitude is no excuse if the cap fits then the governments have to where it and in this case it Bloody-well fits

    Cheers

Re: Government "tried to cover-up evidence"

Well, I have read this with interest and I have to say that the only figure that labor bandy about in regards to closures they WON'T make is 50%. If they were truthfully and ethically going to highlight that what has been said has been Bunkum, then they would have fully stated 30 - 50%, but no. Ian, I am afraid that you have seriously misjudged the situation at hand.

I would also like to know what your evidence is that Bay closures won't go ahead. You say you have written to the AMCS, Beattie and Springborg, in fairness to each party and to fellow members of Ausfish, you should have put up all replies in full, like so many of us have done in the past few weeks.

Mate, if you had checked the AMCS website as little as one week ago, you would have seen that they claimed the deal had been done with the Govt already to ensure these closures. I think I recall seeing something posted on this website about it too, but there are soooo many threads on this topic now that I won't go through them all again.

As the others have already said, let Beattie's record speak for itself, and the amount of misinformation that has come out from the labor party is incredulous. That is part of politics I suppose, but to actually legislate to protect liars misleading the public and their peers, in my book that is reprehensible.

A thief can be rehabilitated and see the error of his ways, but a liar is a person who is beyond help and beyond sympathy. Those who protect liars or a party to lying themselves. This is an action that can never be condoned, and politics in Queeensland has stooped to a record low thanks to Peter Beattie trying to protect a liar.

Anyway, tomorrow we'll see what the future of the bay holds. I will be handing out how to vote cards for the Fishing Party at Ormiston school tomorrow morning, so I am doing my bit, however small.

    Cheers
