Laming says State Government "tried to cover-up evidence" on Moreton Bay closures

Andrew Laming, Federal Member for Bowman has revealed today that the Beattie Labor Government has tried to cover-up evidence of proposed closures to Moreton Bay.
For months, the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) have published their wish to see 30-50% of Moreton Bay closed to all extractive activities, including recreational fishing.
However, following recent media coverage and discussions with Labor party heavyweights, the AMCS have pulled the claim from their website.
Furthermore, in a statement at a recent forum, Labor's candidate for Pumicestone (an electorate on the northern end of the Moreton Bay Marine Park), claimed that there was never statement claim made by conservation groups calling for 30-50% closures of Moreton Bay.
She said, "The AMCS are taking a reasonable and balanced view, calling for the establishment of a scientific taskforce."
Mr Laming, Federal Member for Bowman said that the Labor Party is covering up what is clearly an attack on our rights to fish in Moreton Bay.
"The AMCS have been publishing their claim for 30-50% of the Bay to be closed for months and with a few words from their Labor Party bosses, the AMCS have changed their tune.
"But there can be no hiding the real intent of Beattie's Labor Government and their green allies. The Queensland Conservation Council is calling for no take zones over 20-30% of the entire Queensland Coastline. The AMCS are also a signatory to this claim to shut angler out of their local waters.
"Even the Greens in Queensland couldn't help themselves but support the AMCS's bid to have 30-50% of Moreton Bay closed to all extractive activities.
In a Media statement available from the Greens website, they have supported the call from the AMCS to increase the no-take zones to 30-50% of the Bay.
"What's disturbing is that the Greens have done a preference deal with Labor in 13 marginal seats across Queensland, some of which are on or near Moreton Bay," Mr Laming said.
"It's clear that Labor is trying to hide this issue before the election. By instructing AMCS to change their website and covering up their deals with the Greens, they have shown us all exactly what their intentions are with Moreton Bay.
"Beattie's Labor cannot be trusted with Moreton Bay. These cover-ups and secret deals will strengthen the resolve of the Coalition and anglers throughout the Bay region to protect our rights in Moreton Bay," Mr Laming concluded.
