Moreton Bay - Questions in the Senate

Senator BOSWELL (3.07 pm)—My question is to the Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation, Senator Abetz. Is the minister aware of any threats to the access which Queensland recreational and commercial fishers currently enjoy to Moreton Bay in Brisbane? Is the minister aware of any alternative policies?

ABETZ, Senator Eric, Tasmania1Abetz, Sen EricN26TasmaniaLPMinister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation1Senator ABETZ—It is always a delight to take a question from the Leader of the National Party in the Senate. I acknowledge that he is a great campaigner for the interests of the fishing communities in Queensland, along with all other Queensland coalition senators. I am aware, unfortunately, of threats to the right of Queensland recreational and commercial fishers to fish in Moreton Bay. That threat, as Senator Boswell knows, is Mr Beattie and the Queensland Labor Party. Make no mistake: if Mr Beattie is re-elected, Queensland fishers will lose significant access to this great bay.

Several weeks ago the member for Bowman, Mr Andrew Laming, invited both Senator Boswell and me to a very well attended meeting that we both addressed. I think there were over 400 people at that meeting. It was interesting—all parties were invited, but guess which party squibbed on the invitation! The Labor Party know that it was them. What I told that meeting and what I say to the Senate today is this: Moreton Bay should not be closed to fishing simply to gain Greens preferences. That, unfortunately, is what will happen unless Mr Beattie is defeated on Saturday.

Mr Beattie, of course, claims that he will not close Moreton Bay to fishers. But listen to these weasel words that he uttered early last week. He said:

To ensure the accuracy of the Hansard record, could you please check the following quote.

There would be no mass bans. There is no plan to shut out recreational fishers from 50 per cent of Moreton Bay.

He does not say that it might be 52 per cent or 60 per cent of Moreton Bay; just that it is not 50 per cent. It might be 49 per cent or, indeed, 99 per cent of Moreton Bay. More telling is the letter that the Deputy Premier, Ms Bligh, sent to the Moreton Bay Access Alliance on the same day that Premier Beattie made that statement. That was on 2 September. The letter confirms that a review of access to the bay is under way. It is a letter which pointedly—and Senator Boswell will be very interested in this—fails to rule out any closure of access to the bay for fishers. The truth is that a deal has already been done, because the Greens spokesperson on this has already slammed the coalition policy of allowing Moreton Bay to remain open for sensible and sustainable fishing. Just recently she said that the coalition plan is in contradiction to state Labor’s plan for no-go zones. So the Greens have already let the cat out of the bag as to the deal that they have done with Labor. Of course, the Labor Party simply is not truthful enough to tell the electors of Queensland what they have in mind.

What I have said continually about fishing is this: if there is to be a closure, it should be based on good, sound scientific evidence and not on the cheap pursuit of Greens preferences. I say to the people of Queensland, especially those in the Moreton Bay area, that there is only one way to secure their fishing rights in a sustainable fishery and that is to vote for the coalition candidates on Saturday.

BEATTIE CUTS SECRET DEAL WITH GREENS ON MORETON BA

BEATTIE CUTS SECRET DEAL WITH GREENS ON MORETON BAY

“Premier Beattie must come clean on the deal he has made with the Greens to close large chunks of Moreton Bay to commercial and recreational fishing,” said Queensland Senator Ron Boswell today.

Senator Boswell asked the federal Minister for Fisheries whether there were threats to fishing access to Moreton Bay.

“The Minister, Senator Abetz, said that if Mr Beattie is re-elected, Queensland’s fishers will lose significant access to this great Bay.”

Senator Abetz recently attended a public meeting of some 400 people concerned about Moreton Bay closures.

“A Greens’ spokesperson confirmed that existing fishing rights as supported by the Coalition, were ‘in contradiction to State Labor’s plans for no go zones right across Moreton Bay’.”

“The community has a right to know where the proposed ‘no go’ zones are and they have a right to know before the election, not after.”

“There’s a great sticker on many cars that says ‘I fish and I vote’. If fishers vote Labor on Saturday, they won’t be fishing for much longer in the Bay.”

Senator Boswell said that it was important that Moreton Bay remain accessible to local fishers. “Moreton Bay has been home to generations of fishing Queenslanders.”

    Beattie will close Moreton Bay

    Beattie will close Moreton Bay

Peter Beattie will cut recreational and commercial fisher access to Moreton Bay if he is re-elected this Saturday, the Federal Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation told the Senate today.

“Make no mistake, if Mr Beattie is re-elected this Saturday, Queensland’s fishers will lose significant access to this great Bay”, the Minister said.

The Minister highlighted Mr Beattie’s weasel words on the issue last week: “There would be no mass bans…there is no plan… to shut out recreational fishers from 50 percent of Moreton Bay” (Beattie press release, 2nd September).

He also pointed out that in a letter to the Moreton Bay Access Alliance (also on the 2nd September), the Deputy Premier, Ms Bligh, pointedly refused to rule out closures of the bay.

“The truth is, the Green’s have blown the whistle on Labor on this”, the Minister said: The Coalition’s plan to keep Moreton Bay open is “in contradiction to the State Government’s – [that is Mr Beattie’s] – plans for no go zones across sections of the Bay.” (Greens press release, 27th August).

“Moreton Bay should not be closed to fishing simply to gain Green preferences. “Only a vote for the Coalition will ensure Moreton Bay stays open to sensible and sustainable fishing”, the Minister concluded.

YES!!! But they both had a go - Feds gave it to them and then the State Govt (Beattie) followed up with the death knell - closing beaches... But Gary and KC can answer that better than I. However it SEEMS as though the Feds are trying to "repent" of past sins... time will tell!

    Blaze,

Too bloody right it was. The Libs and the Nats at the federal level created the problems fishernman face in the north.

And yet these same politicians are now coming out supporting recreational fishing in Moreton bay making all these unfounded allegations in the hope people will believe their bullshit and take votes away from Labor.

The Nationals and Liberals aren't serious about fishing. It is just another tool in their political machine. The GBR marine park is a very clear example of that.

    Fisherman shouldn't forget that.

    Hicksy

    We won't forget.
There is a Federal election coming up in the not-too-distant future and I dare say, if something really positive has not been done to rectify that damned shemozal in the GBRMP by the time that election is called, then the Federal Coalition politicians in Queensland seaside seats will be the next ones to feel the bite of fisher-folks protest votes.

Re: Moreton Bay - Questions in the Senate

Hicksy is absolutely right. It was the conservatives who shut us out of the GBR and started this whole issue. Even back then it was a grubby political deal behind the GBR closures and bugger all to do with the environment..The MPA closure stampede has been picked up by (it seems) every state, all of which are Labor states......the common factor is the green party and its influence, not Labor or Liberal.

Look, there is no right and wrong side to this.

    I don't know the answer.

I can say, hand on heart, that we have had some help from a few individual politicians in regards the GBR.

Funnily enough 1 is a National, 1 is a Liberal and 1 is a Labor senator.

I can say I honestly believe that the green party has too much influence on Labor policy at both state and federal level and this is a great pity as fishing is, to a large degree, a working mans sport.

I hope in time that the organised "fishing vote" will become politically more "valuable" to all sides than the "green vote" and, if and when that happens, everything will change.

It is hard to know who is right or wrong or who is the "best" side to run the country or state...I just know TFPQ never will...we are just a vehicle to make sure the fishing community can no longer be ignored and this election, in QLD, the person who needs to hear that Message is the Premier.

Vote whichever way your head (not your heart) tells you to vote on Saturday but if you live in Cairns, Barron River, Townsville or Cleveland, give your first vote to the TFPQ endorsed candidate.

Does it matter who did what. Both sides have screwed us in the past an are no better than each other. The argument should be, who will give us the best deal now, in this election.

Flick you are 100% on the money, and if we fight this fight and fight it hard and passionate and send the state government a clear message, then the Federal Government will also have to take notice as well. Recreational fishing and commercial for that matter it an important staple in the majority of households.
