    Not allowed to fix channel

You may recall my thread on our boat ramp and dredging of channell.
A while back we had heavy rain and it washed part of the bung wall away.
We were going to fix it at our cost as we have been doing for over 40 years.
Government and Epa stepped in and told the boat club we are not allowed to touch it.
Great news and what is next as on your average weekend a 100 boaties use this facility as there is no where else.

Which one was this Troy? Molongle Creek?
Any fishing is good fishing (should probably say Any fishing is...probably going to be illegal soon)

    Troy,

Write to or e-mail your local member and remind them of the Labor Lifestyle Policy. Highlight the dangers to the boating public, and ask them kindly, who'se name the injured person or damaged boat owner is to put on the civil writ for damages when the first incident occurs. Also putting up a public sign at the ramp stating who is responsible for the poor conditions of the boat ramp is something else you should also tell your local member you have done.

I know I went on at length about things you should do in your earlier post, but if you PM me some of the details of the ramp (maybe a photo or two) and who your local member is, I would be happy to draft up something for you to send them, mate. I hate to see people being dealt out rough hands by pencil pushers and politicians who have no idea.

    Cheers

Re: Not allowed to fix channel

Good work Hornblower and kc !!

This sort of stuff is just mindblowing. Probably comes down to just who wants to take the responsibility for the maintenance, whether it's the local Council of the State Government. Of course neither body wants to do the job, but will pass the buck to the other.

Re: Not allowed to fix channel

    Hornblower and KC.
this was what was posted in our local newspaper.
    Molongle under threat.
Recent discussions about improved protection of the bund wall has met with a negative response from government agencies .
'You are advised that EPA does not support soft or hard engineering protection on any part of the bund wall.
The great barrier reef marine park authority /queensland parks and wildlife permit only approves maintenance work and does not extend to reconstruction involving capital works after a major event.'
At a recent all government agency meeting with molongle creek boat club a case was put for the protection of the bund wall by using rock or other methods.
They referred to a paramount need for safe access for the thousands of people who use the facillity to get to their properties at cape upstart and surrounding fishing grounds.
The easter period highlighted how important boating access was when the helicopter was unable to service all stinger victims from that period.Other reasons were based on environmental grounds.,e.g. saving the bund wall from erosion would reduce the impact from extensive yearly maintenance works and would reduce the risk of this eroded material covering sea grass beds adjacent to the access channel if the bund wall is protected . This would also reduce the costs of maintenance and need for volunteers to drive the clubs swamp dozer .
The letter from the EPA referred to the 'inquiry to protect machinery access track for safety' but nothing more was said on this.. It advised that 'permits require the channel and bund wall to be constructed and maintained in accordance with conditions and the sanctioned plans.'
'These conditions and plans do not approve and protection works. '

A club spokesman said there was a real concern that the future of the facility was in jeopardy . it is ludicrous to think that after decades of work to improve the facility and service to the boating public government agencies can shut us down regardless of safety issues or concerns for the environment just because the present permit does not allow it. For years we have had to fight this mentality and believe the community will support the clubs fight for its survival.
We've had massive public support in the past and we need public support now. A spokesman urged local residents to attend the meeting of the molongle creek boat club on thursday night to express their views.

The bowen shire council is supporting the club in its endeavour and mayor ... and engineer ... will be present . Councillor .... said they would have to go through the whole process again and talk to the minister about the situation. He said they did it at a regional level previously but now they will have to get ministerial support. He describe the situation as ridiculous saying they had a pile of applications a metre high last time and they had to make a new application for each new event. It will cost us a fortune and we havent got the staff to be doing that.
the bowen mayor said their own engineer had to go through the applications while the club did a great job with the physical work because a channel was needed to service the cape . it will take a lot of lobbying with the minister.

Re: Not allowed to fix channel

Hello Troy, sorry this has taken me so long to put together, but here is a draft that I have completed for your perusal and any necessary adjustments you see fit. Remember this is only the first shot in what I think will be a long battle, but I am eager to help you, even though I am more than 1000k's away.

You will have to change the red parts as they are bits that I am not aware of. Feel free to pull it to bits etc and if you like try to get other people to send in similiar, or even the same letter.

Let me know what you think

    Cheers
