Girraween National Park will be the first national park in Queensland to introduce a new on-line booking system for camping permits.
Environment Minister Dean Wells said the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) was introducing the new system this week to Girraween as well as Kenilworth State Forest.
He said Girraween visitors would be able to book and pay for camping permits via the Internet at www.qld.gov.au, by calling 131304, or by visiting selected government customer service centres.
Mr Wells said the new services were part of a State Government Smart State initiative to improve customer service through integrated access to government services and information.
Local Member for Toowoomba North, Kerry Shine said that on-line permits will enable campers to secure their site before arriving at the campground as well as to gain up-to-date park information.
"It will provide greater accessibility and flexibility for campers as well as provide additional information for better management practices throughout Queensland's protected areas," Mr Shine said.
Mr Wells said that during the next 12 months QPWS would extend the on-line bookings for camping permits to more than 120 national parks and State forests, as well as for traverse and service access permits.
He said the on-line permits would provide campers with greater access to park information and the ability to book sites at their convenience.
"We are extremely excited about the opportunities the new system will provide for visitors and we anticipate on-line bookings will be extremely popular," Mr Wells said.
For more information about the on-line service, visit the State Government website at www.qld.gov.au or phone 131304.
