Any Recommendations?

Just about to head North again for a long holiday. We know of a few places along the way where the fishing is good, and the camping cheap and the people few, but where are some of those other good places to visit along the way?

Our first stop will be the Gold Coast to get some modifications done to the 12 ft tinny then Noosa for a family visit, then Hervey Bay to visit a "net buddy" then what?

where are all the good spots?

I would suggest you look into going over to Moreton Island or North Stradbroke Island. Moreton has good camping facilities and great fishing at the moment with the Tailor on the bite on the ocean side and some good spots for bream and flathead on the eastern side. You should also be able to see some migrating whales from the beach and cape moreton around this time of year.

Stradbroke is a lot easier to get around as there is bitumen roads on the top end, shops, pub, etc. But you can get away from all that if you wish. Is also a bit cheaper to get the barge over.

Moreton would be my personal pick between the two for a break from the rat race.

I was really going to give Moreton Island and Straddy a miss and just get a far north as possible and as quick as we could.

Anyway it looks as if we will have a great time there all the same, waht is a few days when we will be away for several months??

You haven't mentioned if you will be camping or not.

North from Hervey Bay a great spot is the town of 1770. Good accommodation both units houses and camping. With a 12 foot tinney you will be made as the fishing is fantastic.

If you want to go a bit further I could recommend Cape Hillsbrough just north of Mackay. There is a camping area in the National Park as well as some good holiday resorts. It's at the lowewr end of the Whitsundays and the fishing from a tinney well......... it is the Whitsundays.

Check out Baffle Creek, it's just south of 1770, just 1 hour north of Bundy. If you head there in the quiet months, the fishing can be mighty fine. Exclude Easter in quiet months! But seriously, it is quite undeveloped, just a local shop, pub and camp ground, not much else, and if you have a 4wd you can head up to Deepwater National Park, very scenic. Have a good trip!

Yes we will be camping and we do have a 12 ft tinny we are pretty much set up for anything and everything.



We went through 1770 in January and it looked like a beautiful place but there were more people there than there was in Cairns (or so it seemed). The caravan Parks were one big multi coloured tarp and everyone was piled up on top of each other. We would have liked to stop but it was just too busy.

Cape Hillsborough looks to be Ok (on the map that is), we stayed at Airlie Beach over Xmas and had our best fishing bay for the entire 4 month holiday on xmas day. Absolutley no wind all day...Fantastic. We will get more info on Hillsborough

Deepwater Nat Park is one of the most beautiful pars I have seen. We actually came through there from 1770 on our way to Baffle creek. We stayed at Baffle Bob's caravan Park...what an experience!!!!! He must be the loudest man on the face of the earth...and bossy too. Anyway the facilities were good we had an ensuite at no extra charge.
As for the fishing it was pretty lousy. Several other people were out every day , as we were, and very little was caught. We got 1 keeper in 3 days. Having said that the reports were the same for the entire coast and the wind was blowing the scales off my lures. Still we had a great time.

We will probably stop in at Baffle on the way back.

Maybe you could try Woodgate National Park, (Burrum Coast), or a bit further north at Kinkuna. Haven't actually been there yet, but it sounds mighty nice according to a friend of mine! Want to do it when I get something more capable than a Falcon wagon!!!!! Have a great trip!

my friends are enjoying the area around hinchinbrook island a
nd cardwell while i'm at work
they are fishing the channel and creeks in the area . they have had some luck . cardwell is north of townsvile also townsvile and the local islands could be worth a look just look out for crocs . the boat ramp at shute harbour near airlie beach has a few of my lures and the fishing was real good

You have probably allready done your trip but maybe next time.
We stayed at a small privately owned resort just nth of Arlie beach called "Erlando" nice and quite lots of islands in easy reach. Didnt have much success with the fish but I believe it was the sam for everybody. Suggest you go out of holiday time though as there are a lot of permanent vans owned by the central highland miners.
There is another place just north of erlando called Dingo beach, on the same road. Cant comment because I havent been there
Mission beach area is very nice also but starting to get built out.
If you are interested in seclusion then try a week on North West island, off Gladstone,Absolutely brilliant [img]. When you are returning head inland from Mareeba and come down the Ann highway to Hughenden, about 50 mile north of Hughenden is Porcupine gorge, well worth a look (or it was 30 years ago before it was made a national park) make the effort to walk to the bottom, the black brim fishing was great when I worked on the surrounding cattle station Boonderoo but plan well ahead
