    G'day Brendan

    Don't know a lot about them but found this web site that might interest you. I actually carry a gas lighter when I go bush. Just make sure it has plenty of gas before leaving home.

    Interesting. I saw them on TV and wondered why the didn't burst into flame. According the the site they are an alloy not pure magnesium (which explains why it all didn't burst into flame).

    potasium permagate is another good source of combustion. just mix it 9:1 with sugar, then add a drop of glycerine and stir.

    potasium permagate = $5 from all chemists
    glycerine = $3 from the band aid section of your super market
    sugar = ???um sugar

    do not swallow mixture.

    Are you refering to the small block thingy and, with a knife you "scrape" away some of the stuff onto your kindaling(sp) and then turn it around and strike the knife onto the flint which gives the spark?

    If so, then you can get them from places like Big W. The are pretty cool. As far as i know its cheap and worth it yes (compared to matches anyway)

    Good luck!
