What camp oven is this?
Hi Derek
I reckon this is one for you! I bought a camp oven at a Fernvale garage sale last weekend for the grand sum of $15.00. I figured that included the leftovers from the previous owner's last failed cooking effort - which was solidly plastered everwhere inside.
I can't see a brand anywhere. It is an oval-ish shape with three short legs under. The lid has a flange which fits inside the oven. It has the normal type of cast handle on the lid, and the oven has a wire handle. I guess the overall width of the oven to be about 40cm and around 22cm high.
Any ideas? If I knew how to attach a pic to this post I would! Thanks. Ron Collins, Ed.

Hi Ron
Mate, without seeing it I haven't a clue. Haven't seen a lot of oval shaped camp ovens. But ........... unseen I'll give you $20 for it. That's a fair profit. :-) :-)
Cheers

Re: What camp oven is this?
Hi Derek
Old age caught up with me... The camp oven is round, not oval, and about 35cm in diametre. I've taken a couple of digital pics and will attach to this, if I can work out how to do it.
The unit is quite heavy, especially the lid, and I've looked again but can't see any symbols or brands. See what you can come up with. Ron.

Re: What camp oven is this?
Maybe Derek can suggest the best way to clean a camp oven in this condition (it looks like the last meal was a flop and left in there to fester!) - can you sandblast it?
Is there a shortcut other than elbow grease?

Why. that my old bugger where did you find it ?
Now that you have it you will have to clean it .
Firstly you light a good fire fill the camp oven with water put on the fire. When boiling put in a cup of washing powder boil for some time.( Time not important ) then dive in with scrubing brush , Remove from fire , If not clean .Repeat process un till you have lost interest , Then return to rubbish tip where you found it .

Put her on the fire and when the water is on the boil throw some bi-carb into it ron then take it of the fire and let sit for a while..will still take a bit of elbow but not as much. I used to have one just like that..bought it brand new for the wood stove ..took to it with a grinder to remove the feet. It wasn't sold as a camp oven tho just a cast iron pot...come with a steel tripod and chain....purchased it at nanango
cheers.

Re: What camp oven is this?
Well, Ron you certainly bought a few ideas out with this one. I have heard most of those ideas everyone is throwing up and they all work to some extent. If it was me I would just put water in it and bring her to the boil and just keep it simmering until it all comes off. Might take a few hours but caste iron has a way of repelling unwanted gunk, particularly if it has been seasoned properly.
Judging by the thickness of the material it looks like it could be a good quality pot but I still have no idea where it comes from.
I'm hoping to visit Chris Thomas up at Blackbutt shortly. He has quite a collection of old camp ovens. He might be able to shed some light on it.
Failing all that mate, you can't beat a good four inch angle grinder. :-) :-)
Cheers.
