    Fraser Island

I'm taking the family up to Fraser Island. One is 6 y.o. the other 9 y.o. for a week. Any suggestions on where we should camp. We are pretty self sufficient.
Have a camper trailer, is towing it on the Island OK? Never been before so any tips would be appreciated.

    Cheers, MON.

    Mon,

Basically, you've got about 120km of camping heaven.

If your camping on the main beach on the foreshore just look for signs where you can and can't camp. Rangers close areas for revegetation but there is literally hundreds of kilometres where you can camp.

If you've got the kids they'll love Lake McKenzie and Eli Creek for swimming and stuff. There's a campground at McKenzie which does get pretty full at times. Beach camping up near, but not at, Eli is your best bet if you want to go there a lot.

There are dedicated campgrounds at Ocean lake north of Waddy, Waddy point, Indian Head, Dundubara, Cathederal Beach, Lake McKenzie, Lake Boomanjin, Central Station and Dili Village on the Ocean side.

On the western side there are dedicated camp grounds at Wathumba in the north and Ungowa and Garys anchorage in the south.

If I were you I'd move around a bit with the trailer gradually heading north. North of the wreck of the Maheno is the best fishing generally, especially for Tailor, and north of Waddy or around Sandy Cape at the top is probably best for whiting.

Wathumba on the Western side is good for whiting and flathead etc but be very careful if you plan to drive on the beach on the Western side because you'll sink very quickly. I'd advise not to.

There's plenty of water around so don't worry about that but bring firewood if you plan to make a fire often.

Fuel is available from Eurong and Orchid with those two places plus Happy Valley and Cathederal Beach having a shop. Things are dear.

It's also worth the BAD drive over to Kingfisher to spend a day in their day use area. They've got a lovely pool and bar and facilites to use for day trippers. It's probably 2-3 hours return from Eurong though.

If you go from Inskip point make sure you take the green barge - manta ray - even though it's $10 dearer that the others. The others are owned by the same mob and have been instigating a price war trying to force manta ray out. If Manta Ray leaves - ferry prices will go over $100 easy.

    It's currently about $30-40.

Enjoy your time - any more direct questions just ask. Most people on this site have been a few times.

take plenty of beer and fuel mate, you can always bring it home as fuel gets as high as $1.40/litre and alcohol about 10 times that.

Cheers. I've got a couple of jerry cans and a 100ltre ice box so no problems. Are there any tricky spots up the east coast or pulling the camper should be OK? I'm not that used to beach driving so just want to make sure.

    Mon,

Hook point - which is about 5km from where you get off the barge is only passable at mid tide or lower. Plan your trip around that.

Mack's right about Indian Head it can be pretty churned up especially after school holidays. Low tyre pressue and 3rd low is always good.

If you're going further north than Waddy point watch the track up and around Ngkala rocks. It's soft and people have been stuck there before. You can get up the beach at dead low.

The Rest of the beach is fine and hard genrally but just watch out for the washouts. Don't speed and you'll be ok.

    Have fun.

I was at fraser 3 weeks ago.
I towed my jayco(1350kg).Been there lots of times with it.
Just make sure you let your tyres down to 20-22psi & you will not have a problem. Dont worry about the low pressure because once you disconnect the camper you can put them up a bit. Lots of places have air pumps.
I actually have a ARB pump I carry my self, so I can adjust as needed

Was thinking of heading to fraser for a couple of weeks around new years. Would you get a site? How packed are the camp grounds? Its the first time heading over, got a 97 vitara, should we raise it a couple of inches for the inland tracks? any comments would be appreciated. Cheers.
