Hi all
I've always used my trusty plate on pegs over the fire when i camp.
But i'm thinking of buying one of those round gas ones on the tri-pod stand so if ya want to cook a quick meal u don't have to wait for the fire to be ready.
Anyone used one or have any comments, good/bad?
Yeah most seem to have that grill bit for puttin a billy on.
But what i don't like is they all seem to have some kind of raised pattern on the plate if you know what i mean.
This is good for steak, but useless for doin eggs
I got one given to me but it didn't have any burner. I tried a small low pressure gas ring but I found they were affected by only the sightest breeze. What sort of burner do they have is it high or low pressure and what is the outside diameter of the burner and if you know what is the BTU of the burner.
Why don't you simply get a gas ring to fit under your plate?
I have the same three legged plate as you and that what I'll be doing.
If you do get a portable, get one with the cast iron plate.
I've got one with an aluminium plate and due to the burner being too small in diameter, to get the outside cooking, I've got to put it on full bore which means anything in the centre of the plate burns.

Yeah i was looking at those gas ring thingys for under the plate.
A 2 burner was around $35.

Yer I have one to which I find very good but I have the same problem with the plate.I just bought one for my son, a "Companion Takeaway" which has a "half raised & half flat" plate for around $90.When camping I also use a raised stem for the light & the three burner stove so I can do meat & veges & boil the billy at the same time.

Whenever you use any gas cooker when camping, wind is the biggest problem to overcome. The tripod burners are very effected by the breeze, that's why all the portable camp cookers have three sides of wind protection.
We swear by our gas cooker, an old primus with a small gas bottle and three-sided protection from the wind - we have made it into our barbie by adding a cast iron plate that fits exactly over the cooker.
The cast iron plates cost about $15 for a two burner size from a camping shop. They also have handles so you can lift it off to boil the kettle or cook conventionally with a pot.
The plate is fantastic and cooks everything from pancakes, eggs, steak, sausages, mushrooms and of course fish. We have baked bream whole in alfoil on it once - and it was Yummo
So I can recommend that method to cook barbie style when camping
I was looking at one of the larger gas BBQs (backyard type ones) they have a plate that is flat on one side and ridged on the other. Just turn it over when you want the other style. Worth checking out if the model you are looking is the same.
