    Best camping bed

    Hi guy's

I would like to start to do some camping, not 3 or 4 weeks just long weekends maybe a week, the thing is I have a bad back had spinal fussion back in 1989, I can do almost everything but I need a good bed to sleep. I have a friends tent up in the backyard and have tried 4 different beds, double air mattress, fold out canvas single bed, 4" foam mattress on ground, 4" foam mattress on canvas bed and last night a 6" foam mattress on ground. After three nights of painfull broken sleep I'm ready to give up.

So was hoping you could tell me what you all sleep on please.

    Thanks

This is an interesting topic and I must admit I dont have an answer for you. I personally sleep on an air mattress and adjust the air to make it comfy for myself. In fact I sleep with it only half blown up.

What do you sleep on at home. I know there are some good caravan innerspring mattresses around. If space isnt the problem maybe thats the way to go.

    Cheers.

    Thanks derek
I have a firm to hard innerspring mattress at home and the tent I am tring out is the sportiva double dome odyssey, nice and big, but I can't see myself throwing my home bed on the roof racks. I thought the 6" foam would do the trick maybe I need a denser piece of foam, the one I have is realy old as well.

Your best bet may be to speak to Clark Rubber... they can probably find something that is a similar match to your current bed.

p.s. Very nice tent you have, i have the 2000 model of that tent.

Give a 4" self inflating mattres a go ... they are made from high density foam ... I find them firm and supportive.

yep clark rubber - we use 2 inch thick high density foam rolls. About $70 for a queen size. I get a better night sleep camping than at home - the thing i like is there is no chance of them punturing the floor & you can still use the entire floor space - #when it rains the kids play inside on a nice soft surface.

when not in use they are rolled up & hung from the garage roof - excellent for unexpected visitors too - bt not so good if you have trouble getting down to floor level.

I use a 6 inch foam mattress for camping. I've tried many other types of mattresses over the years, but the 6 inch foam has proven to provide the best sleep for me.

4" self inflating matress works well for us .Bit of a lump to carry but worth it for a comfortable sleep. Ours is 5 years old and no problems. We had a base under it as well but with two people in it being a double you both end up in the middle so now it just goes on the floor. Carribee brand I think

    Re: Best camping bed

    Ynotaj,

In my swag i have 2 x 2" high density foam mattresses with a 1" soft foam layer over the top (used to run just 1 x 2" high density foam mattress with the soft layer but after 8 years of regular use - i once slept in it for 3 months back in my uni days - the second 2" was added.)

i reckon the high density matresses give great support and the soft layer takes the harshness off the high density foam. as good to sleep in (if not better) as my good quality mattress at home.

    hi ynotaj
I can relate to your back problems. I find the best thing for me when camping is a blow up air mattress, blown up as hard as a rock. I have a double one. Look at the thickness of the mattress too. They do vary.
It is very firm and gives good support to my back.

I guess you are just going to have to keep trying different things until you find something to suit your own needs
    Good luck.
There is nothing worse than the agony of not being able to sleep cos your back is killing you.

    Clark Rubber!!!!!!
Nah i reckon you try out the Thermarest range
There the best when it comes to comfort.
    Self inflating
only weighs about 1 kg (great for hiking)
and waterproof too(good on the deck of the boat)
You'll have to check out places like
Mountain Designs, K2 extreme or paddy palin.

    Re: Best camping bed

Thanks guys for your help, I lost my password for awhile so haven't been back to reply, A clark rubber has opened near my town so I will visit them & see what they have, a friend of mine uses a instant bed from austrail, an air mattress that is on a steel frame and covered with a cover, he says the cover keeps the air mattress from moving and gives good support, I am going to try it and see how it goes as soon as I can get it from him.

    Happy camping
    Tony
