I bought a Waeco Tropicool TC32 with cooling capacity up to 30 below ambient. Works on similar principal.
They run your car battery flat in less than 2 hrs if stationary.
Went camping for 5 days and had a powered site and it did ok on 240 volts. I made sure that when i stacked everything was cool and it was in the shade.
It kept the beer cold enough to drink which was the main thing. I picked mine up as a factory second (packaging was damaged) from the fridge shop for $150.

I just thought I should set the record straight.
I have now used my Tropicool Classic TC-32 on two occassions now. Once was for 5 days. We had a powered site and we used the fridge continuously.
The second time was for a weekend camping trip. We wired up a 12v lighter plug in the back of the nissan for the fridge. It ran continuously off the battery and the nissan started the next day.
So having used it now I can say it is definitely better than I originally thought. I does keep beer cold enough to drink and stops the milk curddling.
For $150 + $70 for the ac adaptor I suppose it is okay and maybe I was a bit hasty in condeming it and maybe I can get by with it for a while.
If i had the money I would buy and Engel.

i got the 80l ,freezer, fridge, dairy picked it up new for$1100 did a week at straddie with it and cant complain.Unlike a house fridge it does take a little planning when packing it with food.I plan to use this fridge on my upcoming cape trip.

The cheaper fridge only unit I have work on a thermelectric element. It can heat also but can't see me using that feature.
The fridge freezer unit you have works on compressor technology.
As you say planning is necessary. If you can reduce the temperature of the items you put in really helps. I generally top it up before going to bed with drinks etc. The cans have had time to cool and the fridge has time to recover in the cool of night.
If i had the money to spare i would get a unit like yours especially for extreme hot weather.

Mate,Ive got the 110L Waeco, bought it on special last July,$1300 + Waeco 60 Lt cooler, have had no probs with the fridge freezer,to start off I put a bag of ice in to help, then put all pre frozen food in the freezer, I run it of the car battery and 240 and it will keep it all frozen for ages. The only fall back is it takes a mule to carry it around, but a good investment for camping all the same.

We bought one at christmas and for a little thermo, they are brilliant.
Two weeks camping at Noosa, ran it on the 2nd battery on the boat, used the sola panel to put continuous charge into the 2nd battery via the other cig lighter, no probs for 3 days.
Best tip I got on day 1 at the campground, was we put some ice in the bottom of it, sprinked a little rock salt on the ice, and everything, I mean everything that sat on the ice (prawns or butter) froze.
Average temp in the shade 28-30c, out on the water the inside of the boat was hotter.
Having said all that, still put a swap in the for sale section, to trade our much used in the past, but very little for last couple of years, tinny & motor, for a 'proper' fridge/freezer for the camping trips. Don't intend to lug it about on the boat though, seen enough back strains over Christmas
I reckon they should have come out years ago!!
