New Campground For Bribie Island
Bribie Island: This month marks the official opening of one of Queensland's newest campgrounds on Bribie Island - just in time for the Christmas break.
Premier Peter Beattie and Environment Minister Desley Boyle said the Poverty Creek campground - accessible only by boat or four-wheel drive - had splendid views of the Glass House Mountains National Park and Pumicestone Passage.
They said the most significant feature of the $230,000 upgrade was its eco-friendly design, including a zero-discharge toilet.
Premier Beattie said: "South-East Queensland is home to some of the world's most beautiful places."
"We are protecting them for all time, but they are owned by the people of Queensland, and it is important that they remain accessible," he said.
Mr Beattie said the Poverty Creek site was the second Bribie Island campground to receive an upgrade this year.
"With $1 million from the Smart State Building Fund we were able to upgrade the Ocean Beach campground, a number of the island's roads and tracks and visitor facilities.
"It is all part of a plan to better manage the island," Mr Beattie said.
State Member for Pumicestone, Carryn Sullivan has recently visited the area with National Parks and Wildlife Rangers and was delighted with the upgrade of the site.
"This is a wonderful venue for residents and visitors alike" she said "and the upgrade was well worth the wait," Ms Sullivan said.
Ms Boyle said participants in two youth employment programs - run by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service - had been responsible for most of the work carried out at the site throughout 2002 and 2003.
Ms Boyle said: "These young people have done an absolutely marvellous job."
"They were involved from the very earliest stages of the project in design, layout, construction and placement of facilities such as picnic tables, barbecues, fencing, roads and campsites.
"Their efforts were especially valuable in revegetating much of the site.
"The site has been carefully designed to reflect the site's previous use as a grazing area, with old stock fencing re-used in post and railing fencing, and the old puddle dip kept," she said.
Ms Boyle said the Poverty Creek project, was part of the Government's vision for the magnificent island.
On-line bookings can now be made for the Christmas break (December 13 onwards).

Hi Andy
Don't really know how to respond to that one mate. For me it was a bad day when they were forced to put dingo fences around the camping areas on Fraser Island. I understand the reasoning behind it as I also was threatened by a dingo once up there. I was filming it walking towards me and didnt realise how close it was through the view finder. The bugger snapped at me and missed. (I was a bit younger and more agile back then. )
Getting out with nature and everything that goes with it though to me is being in tune with the real Australian bush.
I haven't been in to Poverty Creek for maybe 12 months or more now and the track in was always pretty grim. Still that kept it quiet as only those with a 4X4 attempted it. Mind you, I have seen caravans in there though.
Not sure what the answer is really as the EPA will never please everyone. There is still divided views on the destruction of the Fraser Island dingos following the incidents on the Island. I have a pretty open mind on it myself.

I was there today. We just stumbled upon it - didn't realise there was a campground there. The track in was no worse than any other 4WD track. We took our canoes in and spent the day fishing. We didn't stay overnight. The area looked worth another visit. I wondered about sandflies and mossies??? Wasn't too bad today. Anyone who has stayed there - how did you find the mossies? There was no water there - a water tank would have been good when they upgraded the facilities.
