g'day
myself and a couple of mates are going on a fishing trip at the end of the year when it's stinking hot and the fish are going off. we've been putting the dollars away. we are going for 2months and have already organised where we would like to visit. can anyone please help us by informing me the best places to camp in the towns listed below, quite a few were found by serching this site. the cheaper the better as we are trying to keep to a budget. we will also have a tinnie in tow. or if you have any other suggestions on places.
1770, stanage bay, ayr/homehill, lucinda, mourilyan harbour, daintree river, cooktown, port douglas, yorkies knob(or general area), russell heads(mouth of russell and mulgrave rivers), townsville, st helens.
there are other places inbetween that we already accom. in.
is it illeagal to set up a tent in the bush or a secluded area?
Re: camp grounds/camping spots for QLD fishing tri
Check out the Tully/Hull and Murry river mouth areas, forget Yorkeys only good thing about the place is the marina with a boat ramp, substitute Palm Cove campsite, has a large fish-able jetty 100m away and an all tide but very good weather ramp 80m away, 15 min trip south to Yorkys all weather ramp.
Try Balgal beach, Taylors beach, Wonga beach campsite- 10min from Daintree ramp, fish and cast net bait 60m from campsite.
For something different Lake Tinaroo (amazing place if you are only used to southern lakes) feet-wet waterside camping at Kali campsite, Cardwell - fish the creeks just north and top half of the channel.
I was right where you were now several years ago, very hard to get quality info for a trip like that, looking back we missed many of the best places, it's local knowledge that makes the difference esp if you can get it before the trip.
The further north you get the less camp friendly it gets within cooee of highly populated areas, lots of places are locked up or restricted against camping, It's only illegal if they catch you
The smaller places with creeks a short drive away will fish better than the larger places on average, explore all those quiet not advertised as a terrorist destination (no glossy brochure's)for the most fun fishing, best camping and best prices if you have to pay.
Make sure you have the mother of all tarps to hide your complete camp under including tent(5m by 3m is just big enough), no fun up here in the summer with just a tent like down south style camping, also make sure your tent has the micro screen as the fly mesh or you will be sooorrrrryyy!!!
Hope you have great fun, cheers nq
Re: camp grounds/camping spots for QLD fishing tri
If you have a boat with you(doesn't have to be big) there's great camping on the islands around here.Macushla on the northern end of hinchinbrook and the haven in the channel. The Family Group islands can nearly all be camped on including Dunk island beside the spit bar and jetty. All these places have nat park camping fees of approx $4.Some of the family group islands you usually have to yourself.Cheers

There is a good book available called Camps Australia Wide 3. It will cost you about $49 but it shows free campsites all over Australia. It's available online and there is a link to it on my website at http://www.aussiecampovencook.com/friendlylinks.htm

Re: camp grounds/camping spots for QLD fishing tri
Mick , when you leave 1770 and come back towards Bundaberg try the mouth of the Kolan River. You can free camp at the mouth--[ Leave it as you found it ] ---- I presume you have a 4wd , you can drive up the beach from Moore Park Beach. Fishing has been good and crabs good around Miara C/p area. Have a good one . Brush.

G'day mate,
I used to live in Townsville and there is a good park at Rowes Bay, it is called Rowes Bay caravan park, and in Lucinda I would recommend the wanderers caravan park. It is close to the water and the boat ramp in lucinda is a treat as well. Happy fishin and tight lines.
Re: camp grounds/camping spots for QLD fishing tri
thanks for that.
do you guys suggest that we book ahead (we don't really want to be kept strickty to an itinery). we are doing our trip during the months of oct, nov, dec.
Re: camp grounds/camping spots for QLD fishing tri
If you avoid school holidays there is no need to book in NQ. Even during busy times you'll find something. For peace of mind, give them a call 24 hours in advance.
