    Swag for the boat

I am planning to buy a swag for a trip up North next month.

On the way up and back we will staying overnight at a rest stop and the plan is to “roll out the swag” and have a snooze.

Once at camp we will staying in a screened gazebo.

I also plan to use the swag on extended fishing trips, sometimes sleeping on the boat other times on the beach. The boat is a 20 foot centre console with NO canopy.

I want something that I can throw up the front of the boat out the way during the day that will not suffer from a bit of water splashing on it.

I thought a swag was pretty simple, now they have Hoops and poles.

Any ideas or feedback on swags appreciated.

Hi there Al, as you said there are lots of swags on the market these days. A lot of them are good and others are not so. The best thing I think you could do is check out a few in camping stores etc and get a bit of an idea of what you want and take the plans to an upholsterer and they will make you exactly what you want with a lot more quality than you will buy in a shop. When you look at a swag you must remember that you will be recharging your body's batteries in it after a big day so make sure its comfy, I recommend a 2 inch matteress as this will give you some comfort but still make it easy to roll up on your own. With all this efandagle swags on the market you still can't beat the original design of the standard swag with the two cover flaps another suggestion is to get eyelets placed in the top cover so you can string it up to give you a lil bit more room but still shelter you. PM me if there is anything else you would like to know.

    Have a look at:

I still swear by the hoop style. Specially after spending some time in most swags available. If you can, custom make one, but my brother was had his own upholsterer business, and it was going to cost more to make one to my standards than it was going to be to buy one.
For a boat, you may prefer the soul type swags, they don't take up too much room, and roll down better than the hoop style.
Have a look around at some of the websites, and see what you like.

These will get you started. There are more on the market now than you can poke a stick at.

    Big Al

Our swag is a double which has a "mini-tent" set up with a fly screen. Used it down the landing at the kids camps but it is really hot and stuffy. Very comfortable inside a tent though when we go on longer trips.

For trips to Havanna etc we now have a couple of those self inflating mats (e.g. Black Wolf $100 each) and a $40 3-man tent from Big W. The mats are great and fold up to nothing and are very light. The tent takes a couple of minutes to set up. The mats will allow you to sleep on the deck of the boat under the stars. Add a light sleeping bag if needed.

Come up for a coffee and have a look!
