Looking at heading down to either Mt Barney or Main Range National Parks sometime in the next few weeks. Have looked at the relevant websites on the net, but not much detailed information is provided - even on QLD Gov sites. Ideally would like to do an overnighter or two nights. Mt Barney is key preference as I want to climb it. Anyone got recommendations/comments/advice on either?

Visited both areas in the last 12 months. Hard to say what is the best area but for the style of camping I like couldnt go past Goomburra Forest Reserve.

Hi all the photos look good, have never stayed there yet but that will have to change.
Mt Barney has three camp sites BigRiggin which has a creek along the edge af the camping ground, kiosk, toilets, showers. Quite good have been there toooo many times to count. Maybe a little to far if you intend to climb the Mt.
Next is Flanagans reserve which is to along a creek but is normally dry and dusty can still check it out for yourself.
Then there is Mt Barney Lodge which is the closest in walking distance and you can leave your car at camp site. not much shade though, it does have a house to rent if you're not into the tent thing a little more pricey $$$ too.

Flanagens wouldn't be too bad with the rain that has been about.Plenty of room and has amenities.

Ben. Barney is an awesome hillone of the big ones for sure.
I went up the s/e ridge stayed up there the night, watched the sun rise and came down the pesents track the next morning.
Another good one to do is Mt maroon you can get up and down in a day no worries.
Oh and Mt flinders is top experiance also.
I've always been a head in the clouds type of fella....
K2 should have all the info and not to mention all the gear you'll need.
talk to Steve if he's there he goes up and down barney like a yo-yo and should be able to give you some guidance.
Yer i've done the same thing. Great views from up top and you can find a nice lil campsite up their easy enough. I'd say Mt Barney for sure.

Two fellas had to get pulled off there today i heard on the news.
One thing that i've learnt over the years is to stick to the higher ridges stay out of the gulleys as they are more often than not quite vegitated and you will loose you're bearings. This is my rule of thumb and applies on most mountains that i've experianced.
