DRY ICE

We tried the dry ice solution to keeping things cold on our camping break and were very disappointed with the results.[ 8 dayblock of dry ICE]
Method: I wrapped the dry ice block in a wet towel and placed the whole thing in a 70 lt Coleman esky. and filled the remaining available space with reusable ice bricks and 2lt bottles of water then covered the whole lot with another damp towel.
Day Two
Block and towel wrap frozen in place to the lining and could not be moved to rearrange space , only those items in contact with the dry ice were frozen. The rest were chilled but not terribly cold.
Rearranged some of the cold brick/bottles to try to freeze them and placed a heavy weight on the lid in case there was air getting in/out
Day three
Same as day two
Day Four Dry ice gone
Conclusion
waste of time and money,

I have also had mixed results with dry ice however, if you keep the esky in the shade, cover it, wrap the ice in newspaper and only acces it once a day, it seems to last ok. We use it for our 'holding' esky' and access it only every second day to remove two days of meat (another hint is to get your meat cryovaced in useable lots). We then place this in the normal eskys and work from there. We have kept meat frozen for up to 8 days using this method on an 8 day block. I guess it comes down to protecting the dry ice. Regular use of the esky is not the way to go!

The dry ice esky was only for refreezing the cold packs and only accessed once a day, very dissappointed with the result, probably wont try again

I have an eva kool it is great for dry ice ,You need two though .1 for frozen , 1 for drinks .Only open dry ice esky once per day .
