    Camp grounds on Burrum River?

I'm thinking of having a week before Easter exploring the Burrum River and near off-shore fishing. Previously I've stayed at Woodgate and only fished the Burrum from the shore. This time I'm thinking of taking the boat and camping at Burrum Heads or maybe Bruxton just up-river a bit. Does anyone know what the campgrounds, boat ramps etc are like in this neck of the woods? Is there any campground you'd recommend?

I was up there Australia day weekend and on a few previous occasions.
Two caravan/camping grounds at Burrum Heads, one council owned and one private. Private one is probably the go, both seem popular.
Two ramps there , one is long and narrow the other is two lane , but can be a bit short at low tide, kind of ends in a speed bump with a drop off.
The long narrow one is closer to the mouth and you can get waves there when there is a north easter, also a few holes and broken concrete.
I have used them both, just can be dodgey on low tide with the wrong conditions. Also depends on the size of your boat.
8 mile reef , funily enough about 8 mile out of Burrum Heads is worth a look.

I normally camp on the northside of the Burrum River. A 4wd is required but may be quiter than on the south side. You drive as if going to woodgate but there is a turn off to the right, 4wd track, it is sign posted Burrum heads nat park i think, you camp just about on the beach. You can drive straight onto the beach and beach launch no worries, never any swell, if boat to big , two ramps at walkers point, very close. You can also drive along the beach to woodgate to the north, takes about 10 mins and have caught mackeral directly off the beach in front of camp. You may want to check out the artificial reefs in front off the woodgate pub, there is a boat ramp there but she can ber a reral bugger at times, check it out.
    Have fun you lucky bugger!!

Thanks - I've seen that ramp in front of the pub and there's no way I would launch there and have to retrieve the boat in the afternoon with the nor-easter blowing. That would be a recipe for disaster. I've also been down to Walker's Point on the north side of the Burrum River. The ramp there looked OK and the shore based fishing was pretty good but I didn't see anywhere that I thought you could camp. Which side of Walker's Point do you camp? I've driven a kilometre or so along the track to the right (upstream from Walker's Point) - is it the 4 WD track you mentioned and how far does it go.
I just found this on a website about Woodgate

The beach south of the 12th Avenue beach entrance can be driven by 4WD.

Drive around Burrum Point and come off the beach at the Burrum point camping ground, then follow the track back onto the Walkers Point Road.

The Burrum Point camping ground is accessible by 4WD only. Facilities include water, cold showers and toilets.

Call or phone the ranger in charge to book a site. Phone: 07 4126 8810.

Sounds like it's out on the point downriver from Walker's Point village. I vaguely remember a road branching off in that direction from the Walker's Point road last time I was up there but I didn't have my 4WD that time - was travelling in luxury with the missus and staying in the cabins at Woodgate Caravan park. This time it all fishing!!!

From Woodgate - head towards Walkers point ie:- turn right into 12th ave off the esplanade. After the r/h turn at the entrance to the rangers staion go about half way towards Walkers Point and there is a sign to the left for Burrum Point Camp Ground - it is not a big sign and it is 4wd ONLY - very sandy track.
Burrum Point Camp ground is actually on the eastern Beach and is still a few minute from the mouth of the burrum.

    Thanks bay_firey

How would I go towing a 4.6m Quintrex into the campground along the sandy track? I've only got a Ford Courier 4X4 which doesn't have the grunt of the old landcruiser (god rest her rusty soul). I wouldn't like to get stuck.

I think (but take no responsability) that you would be ok

There are usually plenty of caravans towed into the camp so you should be ok

We are thinking of doing the same thing over Easter but are looking more towards camping at Woodgate rather than going down the beach to Burrum Heads. Do you know the name or phone number of the Woodgate Caravan Park? How long does it take to get from Woodgate to Burrum River?

The caravan park at Woodgate is called Barkala Caravan Park. The phone number I have is (07) 4126 8802. From the caravan park it's about 7 km down a good but narrow bitumen road to Walkers point, a few houses on the Burrum River. There are yabbies on the flats there and plenty of good fishing water along a track running through the mangroves upstream. I think you'd have to have booked about 12 months ago to get a site for Easter though.

I've booked a two brm + sleepout house next to the water for $300 for five nights. Its a lot easier that way with three kids.

Let me know how you all go.

    Cheers
