my suggestion would be buy an old van and gut it and build it how you like. this way the hard parts are done for you (frame and connecting to chassis)

there's a scrap metal yard in geebung that had allot of new van paneling would be a good cheap way to start from scratch.

When you need bits for the van try camec ( http://www.camec.com.au/ )for all the things you need, they just about have everything to build a van apart from the chassis. You could also try caravans plus as they do online shopping( http://www.caravansplus.com.au/ )

    Re: caravan building

    Hey fella,

Dont know if this helps, but i will share my experience.

We were looking at the same options as yourself, i decided to look around and check out some pop tops as they are very popular now. Jayco dominate the small pop top market, but i came accross and Viscount very cheap of a old fella in brisbane.

I bought a old Viscount pop top about 18 months ago for $1200, its 7 x 12 when folded and then extends to about 18 feet when the 2 double beds are extended. Has a fridge 2 way, gas stove, 12 and 240 lighting, sink with pressure water fittings and water pump fitting which i plumbed with a 60 ltre water tank, a u lounge which folds to a another dounble bed plus a table with room for 4 which also makes another double bed. When i bought it i needed to replace the flooring and some of the internal timber fittings, seats etc etc..

I bought some carpet tiles and cut and glued them, basically a cheap but comfortable refit, it has a annex which i got restiched from a guy in Shailer Park for $40, repainted and resealed the roof, removed the annexe guide and rescrewed resealed.

Alot of weekends and shopping around i spent a further $450 on finishing it.

If you have a 4wd and are looking for something you can tow on the beach or slight 4wd work, i would suggest an older pop top like a viscount, they are bigger than a jayco which are still about 5k for a old second hand one. Dry weight is 650 kgs and it tows very nicely and you can fit larger and wider tyres than a fynch, without replacing suspension etc.

They are rarer than rocking horse.. But if you can find one i recommend grabbing it..

    Cheers

    Dan
