Has anyone fished or camped on this island. I'd just like to find out a bit more information about it as I'd like go there with a few guys from work. I can't seem to find any info on the net about it. What's it like?
I cruised the Hinchinbrook region about 4 months ago and its an amazing place with more fishing spots than you could fish in a year. Garden Island in particular is where we dropped anchor for a couple of nights on the western bay which is where the camp site is. The camp site itself is just the basic flat area with a camp fire area. I cant remember if there was a water tank there like a couple of the sites on Hinchinrook island. If you are looking for information on the sites and maps I believe parks and wildlife would be able to help you with these.
Fishing wise, it would be one of the best spots to target everything from GT's and Mack's to big mangrove jack and bream. The island is surrounded by coral and if you have a tender or tinnie like we did its quite amazing to cruise over as its only a meter or two deep. The best place I found to fish was around a couple of large rocky outcrops on the eastern side of the island that drop off to a good 20m or so. we got a number of travally on poppers and live baits as well as a few mangrove jacks. Heaps of bait in the shallows if you have a cast net also.
Garden is a pretty cool place. Never camped there but had a few fishing sessions around it, and as suggested there is some great variety in the fishing stakes.
There are some huge grunter that have been taken of the sand spit on the western side, and some massive sharks too! Gts surround the Island, along with a few Queenies.
