Straddie is excellent for getting away from crowds if you go down main beach and camp in the dunes.
I was there in school holidays in September and it wasn't crowded at all. Much quieter than I expected.
I'm sure the official campgrounds were busy though.

thing is... schoolies is apparently this weekend!!!
and I know in my year... all those years ago lol... a fair few people went off to straddie.

I assumed... though my assumption may be grossly incorrect... that inskip pen would be not as well known.

Today Im picking up a few new bits n pieces from BCF.... anyone recommend gear for the area? What rigs do you recommend?

    Ari,

Fancy living in Brissy and not visited Stradds yet ...

yes it could be a problem with schoolies this weekend but do yourself a favour and go for a weekend. No you don't need a 4wd to get around but you do if you want to do some beach driving and don't forget the permit either.

Inskip is another good option too.

Hey somervillebm... we didnt want a NSW location simply because Pete loves the castnet. I dont think we have paid for bait for a while now... well actually Im more keen on using whitebait than herring so I typically buy a bag of whitebait.
I love rock fishing I will have to keep your suggestion in mind in the future.

Tony (skippa)... I know, how could I get away with such a thing!!
I've lived in the redlands most of the time as well Shocking... just shocking I know.
Where abouts in the redlands do you live? And have you found anywhere around here that is good for fishing? I mean, there is plenty to catch... if you like tiny whiting and bream We've caught a bull shark in raby bay before. And so many tiny whiting and bream its not funny. This is the monster I caught off Vicky Point not all that long ago... he was smaller than the bait I used to catch him.

I will keep straddie in mind... I might give it a go soon Going out in the boat this weekend (from reddy bay) and out in open water. Ive never been out in open water before... I am going to have the time of my life no doubt. Maybe the weekend after that I will give straddie a go.

    UPDATE:

Well... it certainly was an interesting couple of days, wish we had longer. Because the trip up there is so long and we only had one night it wasnt all it could have been.

The area is just beautiful and the bird life is very different to what I am used to, we spotted a few birds we couldnt identify, which is always cool
The camp sites are lovely and we were pretty much unaffected by schoolies
The beach was just beautiful, perfect in fact. And so was the weather.

But of course the main aim was the fishing.
Well... basically... we didnt come prepared and we had such little time we didnt have the opportunity to ammend that mistake. Now, had we been able to I suspect we would have some nice photos of the tailor that we would have been pulling in But no wire trace left us in a bit of a pickle. We lost plenty of hooks to them... what we were told was most likely tailor. I got one biggin in close before he bit me off and left me standing waist deep without a hook. He was almost close enough to grab as well. I almost had a hissy fit right then and there I'd faught him all the way to just a couple of metres infront of me and THEN he bit me off. lol Ah well. At least we had fun.
There were plenty of hardyhead and hering hanging around for bait.
And plenty of little toadies which the other fishermen along the beach would catch in their castnets and leave out on the beach to die. > They may not be the catch of the day, but no need to let them die a slow death because you arent pleased with catching them... c'mon! They dont deserve that. Not to mention dogs on the beach may eat them. Pretty irresponsible. Rant over.
Anyway... there was plenty of bait and the flathead.. they are fairly prolific, enough that you could often see them sitting by the drop off on the sandbank. They were only on the worms though and we had no success with catching any worms for bait.
But what ever it was biting us off wasnt after lures (or any that we had on us anyway and we tried a fair few, we have a rather large collection) or bait that was sitting still... we would chuck a hering on, cast him out and reel him in. It wouldnt be long before we got a hit.

In the end, we didnt land a thing. And we had so little time as well. But we had fun and I would love to go back again, a little better prepared next time. The area was beautiful though and we did have fun. Even if I did get burnt to a crisp!

So thanks guys for the suggestion you can be sure I will try out your other ideas before the years end as well. Just need to convince the partner to get out to do them. If I can pry him away from work for long enough... fair enough he works at BCF, but wouldnt you rather actually get out and get stuck into the fishing than standing around talking about it with customers?

I did get some photos, but had limited time so really took very few.
