    Dynema or strap

    G'day people
My dynema has broken 3 times now when retrieving the boat, so i need to replace it. It's actually too short now lol.
How does a strap go, stitching would be the weak point I'm guessing?
    How is dynema measured, diameter?
What size for a 23ft monohull?
What's on there now is probably original 17years. It's all flattened, so not sure on size.
    Appreciate any input
    Thanks

Straps break quicker than dyneema, they are affected by UV light more.
Dyneema is measured as a diameter but it should also reference a breaking strain test weight as well.
7mm dyneema has an average breaking strain of 6 tonnes....so I would opt for 7mm or 8mm....the larger the diameter the less burying will occur when winching.

Replacing the dyneema is not a huge cost every 5 to 10 years.

I bought mine from a sail mskers place, there are various grades of dyneema, I've also used it on cast nets but the one on yhe Allison winch is a different grade snd stiffer, it was 8mm from memory and still going strong 10 years later 🤞

Wouldnt mi d going up the extra 2mm just to be safe.

The 6 mm probably has the breaking power but as Jack indicsted it will cut into itself more than thicker lines. Shop around, sailmakers have the softer dyneema but a thicker one woold be perfect plus they'll show you how to splice it, that's how I first learnt how to do it.

6mm dyneema will be neough for a 23 ft hull, unless you have seized rollers and are winching up a steep ramp. And even then, probably enough. But 8mm, as others have pointed out, will be even better, at little extra price. Straps are just horrible, IMO, the tend to ride up and get chewed by the main gear, they double over, and rot quickly. The one on my current boat was replaced at 2 years, cheap 6mm dyneema still going strong three years later.

On another note--why do you not see Powerwinch users with Dyneema? They all seem to stick with, or replace with wire, the original wire rope. I assisted with loading a 7.5m ali hull on an exposed beach recently, blokes at the back trying to keep it lined up on the fully rollered trailer were getting hammered. I was up the front operating the Powerwinch, and the bloody friction knob kept backing off as soon as the load came on. Owner had no idea why, "had never done it before" So you had to keep it locked with one hand, operate with the other, no hands to feed the wire on neatly. It was all very hectic, and his brand new wire was a frigging mess by the time we had finished. Dyneema , it wouldn't have mattered. I hate wire on any boat winch.

Replaced mine 10 years ago on hhe powerwinch, great hand saver, only takes 1 strand to break to cause damage.

That's good to know. what size Dyneema did you use, and what size winch is it? Just for future reference purposes. I'm usually a drive-on person, just find it easier all-round, but the existing winch, if it is ever to be replaced, would be replaced by a powerwinch. Sometimes tides and beach slopes mean you can't drive -on, or not fully, at least

It was 8mm, not sorry I went that way. I'm also drive on but the ramps around here it's rarely possible to get the tide just right to be able to drive on all the way, usually stop short around 500 mm, one reason I haven't gone for a boat catch.

They recently refurbished a ramp I frequently use but only the very top of the ramp got a change of incline. Pretty useless change all around.
The powerwinch I have is I think an old 900, beige coloured case, cracked with the switch replaced but still working. If I had to replace I would want one that had a reverse feature on it.

I have one crew member who knows the in/outs but others require constant instruction.

So I've ordered 10mm off fleabay.
What's on there was at least 8mm i think, hard to tell really as it's pretty deformed.
Hopefully i will be able to get enough wound on to work.
Let yous know when it's here.

    Re: Dynema or strap

    Arrived today.
10mm is bigger then what i had, i would measure it as 12mm myself.
Anyway i bought 30 meters and cut 10 meters off. It filled the winch nicely. I bought a 30 meter length that came with a stainless eyelet loop thing and the black protective sleeve each end and i left that on, maybe protect from the sun as well.

    Re: Dynema or strap

I managed to get into rtm a couple of days ago, biggest they had is 8mm and fleabay is a lot bigger relatively. Not sure of the quality online, and why i went to 10mm as well.
Yea, it will "shrink" the diameter under load I'd say, I'm just glad i had enough room to get 10 meters wound on.
