Safe Passage - Altona Boat Ramp Entrance

    Hello.

I have an enquiry about heading in/out of the narrow passage at Altona Boat Ramp.

As the entrance is fairly narrow, I am weary about impacting the rocks on either side of this entrance - in the event of giving way to other boaties coming the opposite direction.

For example - If I am heading out from this passage and another boatie is heading in at the same time through this passage, there is very minimal room without veering too much to Port Side.

If we are both committed to enter / exit the passage from opposite directions, what should happen to ensure safe passage and no impact / damage to the outboards?

No idea about that particular location, but, surely it’s wide enough for two trailer boats? If not, then perhaps checking before going through that there’s no one coming in might be advisable. Is there a bar or swell to contend with?

Is this Altona in Victoria? If so, I just googled it and it “looks” like there’s plenty of room.

Thanks Noelm. No bar or swell to deal with. The water depth is just enough in the center for a single boat to travel in one direction at a time, but on both sides (off center), there are large rocks underneath that may cause impact to the prop.

Yeah, I googled it and saw where it is, no swell there! The entrance looks plenty wide enough in photos, but I have never been there, so really have no idea. Have you seen others pass coming in/out?

    Thanks Noelm.

No, I have not observed boats passing side by side in this narrow passage.

If you are a bit worried about it maybe go for a spin down there on the weekend, without the boat, and watch the comings and going or ask some locals what the go is.....might pick up a few fishing tips where they are biting as well...
