depends on the locations. some areas will be better than others depending on their commercial use of the area.
considering that CMOR mapping in the US was the only offering of high res mapping for a little while at insane prices. i think what we have available from garmin and cmap is pretty good

    Re: Relief Shading

I have it. As Moose says, results are variable. Around where I live, it is really no value at all. But go further north, up towards Exmouhth, and it is brilliant. I've only just loaded it onto my Platinum + card-looking at all the deep water features showing, I thought i could recognise productive ground I already fish. So I loaded the marks, and, yes, there they are over the features. But, of course it's the features which I DON'T have any marks on that are exciting. The bottom up through there out to 350 metres tends to follow a fairly predictable pattern, so, once you work it out, you can keep finding more of the same. But there are random prominent bits which might only be 0.4nm outside, which I have never seen. Or a piece where you have only one mark, put there for prospecting, which turns out to be the flat end of a really good looking feature. I have also noted there is a a particular type of shading on an area which produces big red emperor for me, so there is more of that to look at. And so on.

The best way to find if it is of any value for you is to download it on your mobile device via the app--you are getting the same resolution as you are on the plotter. See if it looks interesting. The problem with it on your plotter is that you cannnot have both Satellite View and Relief Shading loaded on the same card, at least with Raymarine. If you try to load when when the other is loaded, it writes over it. You can reload it as long as you have an active subscription, of course. But on the mobile app, you can have both at once, and flick back and forward between them.
So I will be having Relief Shading loaded for the Ningaloo trip, and Satellite View for the Monties and Shark Bay, where you have a lot of shallow water to navigate. And my iPad along, so I can check on relief shading if I feel the need to.

I got the C Map reveal charts with a Simrad sounder late last year. It seems pretty good overall but the relief shading seems to be useless here in central Qld. Maybe I just haven't spent enough time playing with it, but there is a certain Qld gov. website which does a great hillside effect that works on the ocean as well as the land. Its quite detailed and is very helpful for looking for old gold diggings etc. Also helpful for gov. to ping people for illegal clearing and earthworks. It will pick up a hole the size of a car, or a single large tree being removed. At least on land, ocean not as detailed but still not bad. pm me if interested

    Re: Relief Shading

    Hi,
I I’m not sure how relevant this is to your question but I am interested on others opinions as to why relief shading on Navionics shows no real ground through the 36ers and 50 fathom reefs from the Goldy down to tweed? It clearly shows close reefs like mud hole and 9 mile but bugger all until out in 250m plus where it shows canyons etc. Is there simply not enough reef at 36s or what is the go? Attached is a screen shot showing the ground out wide compared to the marks on the left which are along the 36 fathom line and hold fish.
    cheers Paul

    Re: Relief Shading

Over the past 18 months i have found my cmap card is great is certain locations along the NSW central coast (e.g off palm beach) but lacking in others. I do not go out very wide though, generally no further than 2-3mk off shore ( small boat)
