    Hotspotting navionics

    Hi all,
I have recently installed Navionics on my iPad. I bought a weatherproof case and made a bracket to install on my dash. My iPad doesn’t have a SIM card but I thought i would be able to hotspot through my phone when off shore however Navionics doesn’t appear to work through hotspot? The iPad can connect to the internet and browse no problem through hotspot but Navionics doesn’t know where it is. Am I doing something wrong or do I need an iPad that connects to cellular?
    cheers..Paul

That’s a bit strange as my iPad used to work with no cellular as it was gps capable on navionics, sorry that I can’t help but I know mine used to work around the Whitsundays

No I’ve just got a iPad with the Navi on it and no SIM card and it worked for me at Monduran dam ok.

Its not going to show your position on the iPad it’s just shows you the nav chart ,it’s just a mobile chart to look at the topography and contours depths and navigation aids ect.

Navionics should work through a hot spot ...... just as long as you have signal

More of a GPS issue than an internet one.
Is GPS enabled on your device?

Is it a WiFi only iPad, I was sure that the WiFi only ones, without cellular didn't have a built in GPS. Maybe they've changed, I've moved away from Apple now.

Thanks for that. If what you say is correct, why would they have the option to make and follow a route? Doesnt make sense.

Thanks Chris that’s what I would have thought. And it should show my position and be able to create and follow routes or this is only available with GPS/cellular iPad? I think this may be the case.

Hi and thanks for all the replies. I just went for a drive and was able to hotspot my iPad and create a route to home which worked. It didn’t show my speed but showed my position which is all I really need. I will try it again offshore hopefully Saturday and report back if it works.
    Cheers,

Hi just an update it works in the river but as soon as get offshore the iPad doesn’t know where it is. I can only think lack of signal although it connects to the internet ok and phone has no issues even at the 36ers. Weird.

Data and phones are 2 different services and can even be sent via 2 different towers so while you might have phone signal you won't necessarily get data, including photo's attached to msgs.
