Thread: No more Croc attacks..

    Re: No more Croc attacks..

About 15 years ago the wife and I had a few days at Port Douglas. Went swimming off the beach. At the time I was musing to myself about how amazing it was that crocs attacked people in the rivers, but not in the ocean. We knew there were crocs in the river on the other side of the headland. Bit silly looking back now. I wonder if they ban swimming there theses days?

Its a pretty common misconception up here gunna and with tourism being one of the biggest money spinners its something thats not widely spoken about ..

its a bit like snorkeller deaths from supposed heart attacks every year on the commercial reef boats...irukandji stings can cause cardiac arrest but are rarely mentioned when these people die.

Anyway just while we were halfway out of the bar at Hull Heads on sunday the japanese bloke with me wondered why we had seen a 3m croc just a couple of hundred metres from the entrance but why dont they go into the oceans...

I think it was very difficult for him to comprehend that they can and do, regularly, particularly in the wet season, go cruising along the beaches, island and headlands and sometimes also for a swim right out through open ocean to the reef ..every stinger season crocs end up trapped inside the swimming enclosures right along the far north....most often you wouldnt even know they were there without them getting trapped there...

There is a few resident crocs along the heavily populated Northern beaches of Cairns as well with dogs on beach walks with their owners around the creek mouths getting taken ..

In reality though there arent that many attacks from them and its pretty rare to happen in the ocean...more of just a just being a very slim chance of being in the wrong place at the wrong time because mostly you would probably see them on the surface swimming along a beach rather then submerged and hiding in wait in the murky waters of the mangrove lined estuary which is their more usual habitat.....

Interesting that the bloke was on a resort boat, nice looking one too. You'd think they would have had a drone up an about croc spotting as it is a known habitat and the water is crystal clear where they were. Makes one wonder how it got so close to them.

    Edit:
We used to camp up near the Jeannie River and crocs and though we'd never see the crocs in the ocean but there was always sign of them being there. Usually where fresh water is running through the sand dunes, animals come down to drink and the crocs come ashore mostly at night to grab dinner. Always found their tracks the next morning.

The problem is you still have the greenies and extreme conservations (most live in cities) still believe and think the croc is "Endangered" and must be protected.

Yeah I particularly like the one where he puts his hands over the crocs eyes...it looks pretty simple and easy..I reckon I'll give it a go next time I am attacked.

I think it means to push his head down, needless to say I'll give it a go next time I see one.
