I currently run Raymarine Axiom MFD's with Navionics Platinum and find it provides enough detail to keep me happy.
Although, I have seen (online, not in person) C-Map Reveal and the bathymetry looks far more detailed than that of the Navionics offering.
garmins new G-Navionics vision plus cards are rather detailed.
in the coming year or so we are also going to see some very interesteing goverment charts becoming available as part of raymarines lighthouse charts too
CMAP reveal is pretty awesome for a noob like me, for my area ( central coast NSW) the detail for reefs along the coast has changed the way I fish and my catch rste went way way up. You can check on their website for you own area and see if the reveal/high res stuff is what you are after. Money well spent IMHO.

I use both cards. CMap Reveal for my freshwater lake fishing and Brisbane river, Navionics Platinum for Moreton Bay and offshore South Passage / GC seaway. I find the social maps on CMap of the various inland impoundments very detailed and they are updated regularly, I am guessing more freshwater fishermen use CMaps and add to the CMap data base regularly. However, Navionics links better with my android phone and is a handy backup for offshore fishing. I can link / transfer my waypoints, routes and tracks between my Raymarine plotter and the Navionics app without any problems, also I plan a route on my laptop and transfer to the plotter via the app. Not sure where you fish, but hope this information is of some help. Soooo have some saved waypoints on a backed up G2 Vision card for Homeport , question is how best to transfer these wayponts to a new Garmin unit..Via garmin basecamp , directly to the unit via the old G2 Vision Card or ???...
Shouldn't be an issue providing your old card isn't the normal size SD card, I've upgraded before with no issues on a Garmin, everything came across fine.

I now use ExpertGPS for all of my waypoint compiling, editing and transfers between various breeds of machines....far less troublesome than Homeport or Basecamp. In the end it is just the file type you need to save as. EasyGPS is the free version of ExpertGPS with far fewer parameters and options.
I do not back up to a mapping card......know of two people that have corrupted the charts using that card for waypoint, route and track storage.
When I need to edit or weed out waypoints I save the entire directory to the SD card and then edit on the PC.
Save the edited directory back to a clean card, then remove everything from the sounder and do a clean install of all data.

Jack, he is going Garmin to Garmin and it won't be an issue. I believe the card he's using only has copy from the head unit, Garmin Homeport needs it so that the depth contours etc show up on the laptop/desktop.
Do you by anychance have had much to do with Lowrance, I'm struggling to connect via my mobile, can't find an easy way to copy, edit and replace WP's. I only have it to use with the Motorguide as I can't see the lights on the MG and thry don't have screen remote. I think I've mentioned previously how much I hate Lowrance.

Well waypoints taken care of with Garm I n Express. Now just need to see how i go uploading Navionics Vision Plus Card when it arrives.
Flush mounted the UHD2, tediouse effort trying to get a smik job running to tranny lead up to yne unit without a mess .
Frustration at Max trying to download updates n maps as well assetting up the unit Wi Fi via Active Captain etc..
What had me doing dummy spits , have had Garmins in the past and everything with cards n uploads was straight forward.
This idea of downloading Apps to phone ot tablet as well as PC to make you unit do as its told is a tad mi d hoggling for us old farts ey !!.
Just a general observation on the excellent "layering" options available now. I love the Navionics Platinum + with the satellite overlay for its visual detail in shallow water. Makes the job of navigating areas with lots of shallows and winding channels so much easier, particularly on those overcast, still days. I use it for trip planning, spying out likely anchorages in unfamiliar areas ( on both the phone app and the plotter) , and even picking likely fish areas if you are in behind the reef. Out the Montebellos last year--fresh sou'easter blowing all day, overcast, swelly. Limits your options. We'd had a lazy morning wandering around the maze of islands, wanted a fish for dinner. Should be able to score a spango for a curry. The water was filthy inside the reef due to the big swell, struggling to see bottom in 2 metres of water.. So I looked at the satellite overlay--nearby, there was a big sandy patch with some scattered coral lumps, with a channel to the outside a bit deeper than the rest of the reef.. Occasionally breaking today, not on the overlay. Looks likely, if your spangled emperor are like ours.
So I was able to zoom in, anchor on sand , cast to sand, stay away from the coral, chunks of fresh squid on a 9/0 circle--instant action, first one on board was almost 70, and they came thick and fast. Killed a small (55), released about a dozen, and a horse Chinaman, as well as keeping a nice tuskfish. Love catching spangos in the shallows, they go so hard.
Ok, reminisences aside, I lose something when I go down to get that excellent detail, and that is the sanctuary zones which show on both the Detailed and Fishing options on the Raymarine menu. Select relief shading, which gives you satellite on the lower zooms, and those lines disappear. No problems that day, I knew I was at least a mile away from the nearest one, but, if you are unfamiliar with an area, and there is zoning, you need to keep going to the menu and changing overlays to make sure you stay legal, at least over here.
Is that the same for other areas of Australia?
