    Jack Rod mod

Some actual experience would be great - I see quite a few good quality barra specialty rods for sale but IMHO they are generally too long for serious jack fishing (50cm +). My question is that if I trimmed one of these rods from say 1.8 m to the top or 2nd top runner, probably losing a total of 6 cm and 13 cm respectively, replacing the runner with a tip, how much would it affect the action of the rod? My sense would be that it would "heavy up" the initial capability to stop or pull a big jack out of structure, but I have no experience of doing this to a rod. Thanks in advance.

Your over thinking it just buy a 5'6 or 5'8 rod don't chop one down you need the tip to cast, ive caught a fair few jacks small to larger and you never know how big they fight until you land it,some have fought above and beyond the size and some big ones have been slugs or unstoppable just get a 8to14lb stick,my all time jack stick is a old berkely bump 5'6 with a curado200B as its good for casting live baits and lures.

And as to pulling them out of structure sometimes you can and sometimes they have wrapped you up and nothing will get them out so a heavier rod means nothing.
