I think less than 20 years (that's just a guess, no real facts) I just see the time put into battery technology will produce a "miracle" breakthrough, then it's just cost, sometimes that's the biggest hurdle.

And road infrastructure will require huge upgrades, stop/ start traffic really sucks the life out of EV

Stop start traffic would give you greatest range you can get from a full electric vehicle
and even the worst Ev has three time the range needed for a Penrith to Sydney commute

and replying to noelm about not minutes to charge at home
    we’ll there’s two scenarios

daily commute you just plug it in while sleeping and it will use less then your home aircon
I charge from solar on Saturday Sunday and that gets me through till Friday so Thursday night a $2 charge gets me through Saturday
that’s 450 kms a week for $2 and no waiting for charging ever the vehicles always available for use

On big trips 20mins gives me 80 percent charge again to keep going
you pay for it at a supercharger so Wagga Wagga to Sydney return and the cost is $36 for 900kms

Not arguing here I’m living that life and actually using one.
also have a diesel for those trips where it may not work but havnt hd to consider that as yet

charging from the dirtiest brown coalpower plant and including building the vehicle is still greener then filling any petrol vehicle per km. But then plenty of rubbish information for the neigh sayers to keep regurgitating
They arnt perfect but they work

yes it would be slow and for estuary’s and freshwater stuff but if fuel was stopped it would still get me to the same spots now
would just have to launch close to spots etc
You can do it on the cheap if you are launching close to where you fish. An electric trolling motor will push an inflatable or other small craft along at a fair clip. You should get a couple of hours out of a deep cycle 100 ah lead acid batter at full power. Quite a bit longer at reduced power.

    Yep

Last boat was 95 percent electric use and very little main engine use

obviously not everyone’s situation but if fuel disappeared boating could still happen, just it would be different to what we do now

will be years or decades off so nothing to worry about, fuel may just be a little expensive

    Nothing's free, Noel.
More about it answering the battery weight problems for boats. I take your point on storage difficulties but most boaties fill up on the way out anyway and don't like keeping fuel sitting around. Bulk stockpiling it is however, a problem...for the moment. Nitroglycerine was a bigger storage problem until they infused it in a carrier and called it dynamite.

Maybe generate it at the marina level using sunshine, wind and all that water laying there, selling it right there with minimal stockpile. I spose you'd have H2 fights to go with the boat ramp fights then.

Mate with a Tesla almost got stuck due to stop/start which is start, move 1 car length, stop, he was supposed to have enough to get back to Buderim but gridlock on the Gateway Motorway had him hoping he had enough to get to a charging station. Maybe the Tesla3 is much better at handling gridlock.

An hour at full clip until you are starting to degrade your lead acid battery

When you talk to people you fish these dams that dont allow combustion engines you hear just how much of a pain in the butt it is ...... the reality is that you probably need 200amps plus depending on how far you travel on these dams .

Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

    Re: 300 HP Electric Outboard.

The whole thing is just a circle, we need bigger capacity batteries, but they need to be lighter and smaller, we need more speed/longer run time, that needs a bigger motor, that needs a bigger battery, we need to charge it, that takes a power source, we need to charge it fast, that's an even bigger power source, a bigger power source requires a much bigger "grid infrastructure" that require huge amounts of cash, and decades to build, so, we need better, small batteries........

Better small batteries will never exist (with the exception of minor incremental improvements).
There have been no real leaps since lithium entered the picture and there is nothing on the horizon.

To meet all needs a better source of power needs to be used whether that is fuel cells, bio fuel, or whatever else.
I am hoping for a Mr Fusion off the back of a delorean
EV's will suit a great deal people, but they are not for everyone. Fossil fuels will be around for a very long time yet.
