Thread: Crabs

    Crabs

It's been a pretty lean crab season here so far, the bottom of Lake Illawarra is covered in fine silt/mud, I think it might be runoff from the continuous rain we had? Add to that, unseasonally cool water/weather. Still getting enough, but this time of the year, bag limit (10) should be easy to get by 8-9AM. I was talking to a pro crabber the other day and he is taking his pots out for a month to see if it improves.

I've just moved to FNQ noel, what an eye opener. Put 2 traps in a remote creek from the bank, lifted one the next morning, couldn't get the other one because a croc had dragged it to the rope limit into deeper water that I was not going in. Reset the first one that had 16 mudcrabs in it (yes I released all but 1). Lifted both the next day when the tide was lower for a total of 3 lifts and 33 muddies. Admittedly most were female and unders but what a healthy fishery. Spoilt for choice up here. Shhhhhh! don't tell anyone.

I used to know a few blokes that went up past Cairns, done very well, the place they normally went to had some crocs but years after the croc population expanded big time.
