Exclamation Best and Freshest seafood for Xmas

I am not going to be precious about advertising because Brett & Leeann are very long time members of the Ausfish family. Been to many events and fished with these guys and know them well.

Too well in fact, the poor buggers got their house flooded in 2017 and again in 2022. They live at Murwillumba.

But they were on The Today show yesterday claiming to have Australia's freshest seafood.... can't argue with that when you find out what range they have. It's the 2nd video, scroll down

Actually saw the show. If I was closer I’d support them.

    Well done Brett & Leanne

Not too sure what goes on, but Woolies seems to have a monopoly on Crystal Bay Prawns, they have them all the time, fresh every day, the fish markets only have them now and then. They are pretty good Prawns I reckon, had some Friday for lunch. I hope to get some local school Prawns soon, but so far, there's been none around.

Yes Noel, I really do like the Crystal Bay prawns, farmed in NQ and delivered fresh cooked to my local supermarket. No need to line up for hours at dedicated fish co-ops or shops, as the big retailers do seem to have a monopoly on these farmed prawns and you can be guaranteed what you want be pre-ordering . Having said that, trawler caught prawns , cooked and delivered fresh are also great. The big difference between farmed and wild is the farmed have " no sand track = poo shute " and for those princess's that pull out the sand track prior to eating, farmed make sense. The farmer " purge " the prawns prior to capture so their poo shute is empty.

Also having said that, for wild caught prawns I tend NOT to buy our local ones, as the trawl industry in Moreton Bay has a horrific history of unsustainable Prawn to by-catch ratios.

Under NO circumstances do I ever buy imported prawns... even if they were giving away this poo, I would not accept. Bio_Security Australia has a lot to answer for in this respect.

Agreed, imported Prawns are not allowed in my place, it's pretty hard to beat fresh (not frozen) Mooloolaba Prawns, and even topping them, is Lake Illawarra Prawns, but they have been scarce lately. Crystal Bay have got to be the top as far as farmed, readily available Prawns go. I have a relative that works in a Woolies deli and said they get them fresh every day, or they don't have them. Now and then, they come in a kind of giant Tupperware box, instead of the Styrofoam box, and they toss them away, they make great boxes for storing "stuff"! I do like the green Black Tigers that Woolies have too, they are great for cooking in pasta and stuff like that.

Just as a side note....Woolies had 3KG boxes of frozen extra large Crystal Bay Prawns the other other day, for $63 a box, I got a box for the freezer, "just in case" there is no Lake Prawns, I defrost them in seawater and they come out pretty good for frozen, and it's only for my freeloading relatives at Christmas anyway! Just starting to get setup for them now, only got 31 for lunch this year.......so out come the folding tables and chairs, eskies, bags of ice stocked up, Ham in the fridge, Turkey, tick, fresh Chickens ready to roast, tick, Pork, tick, a thousands desserts ready to be made, tick, countless bottles of softdrink, tick, cases of beer for the ones who turn up and are "not drinking" and then drink all ours, tick............

Dont delude yourself Phil..its not just Moreton bay but i do struggle to understand why its allowed there at all..I think so much of fisheries regulations is politically based negotiations instead of science based..

The rest of the Trawl fisheries in Qld are terribly destructive also...

Despite some trawlers having Bycatch reduction devices and some even with Turtle excluders these are merely ticking the boxes and might result in less bycatch but there is still thousands of tonnes of bycatch killed to put prawns on peoples tables..and most of the trawling is done in the GBRMPA areas right along the coast between the coast and the reef...it cant be particularly good for seagrass meadows and soft corals either, thats for sure

I used to live right on the beachfront in a small town that was trawled at certain times of the year..You could hear the diesal engines going back and forth all night and watch the lights out there...with the right tide and wind the smell of bycatch washed up all along many km's of the high tide mark of the beach was horrendous..and that was only the small stuff..I dont know what happened to any dead dolphins, turtle and dugong etc..

I never really thought much about until I lived that experience..Nowadays I honestly dont know how anyone could, in good concience, be involved in practices that involve trawling and netting ...its just so non-discrimatory and barbaric..

I'm not entirly convinced of the benefits of farmed prawns when the capture of the fish to make meal and pellets as well as the clearing of mangroves and environmental concerns of release of chemicals and wastewater into nearby waterways are taken into account..The pilchard for their food are still trawled.

I dont have the answers but its food for thought while we are peeling those xmas prawns and bugs..

They net pilchards off the beach or seine net them they don’t trawl for pilchards and so I can answer we’re all these dead dolphin s and turtles and dugong go from the trawler they dont kill any walk into a fishermen s pub up your way and ask them how many dugongs and turtles and dolphins they kill and you will get your answer first hand and you can hear them laughing at you when your leave.
And what chemicals are released from prawn farms that natural prawns would not be depositing anyway .

Not too sure how fisheries regulations can be politically based, there is 5000 times more recs than pros, politics are about votes and numbers, that just doesn't stack up! I think the Dugongs and Dolphins might be stretching the imagination just a tad.

You are kidding if you dont think there are environmental and ecological concerns with large scale aquaculture projects in or adjacent to the coast, rivers and ocean...

and yeah netting doesnt result in tonnes of bycatch of many species or the depletion of certain target species (spotted mackeral ring netting anyone..?)...another myth ya reckon...

Also trawling doesnt ruin the ocean floor and destroy seagrass meadows..?..some may laugh but I am not...

Look I am not for one second saying dont eat seafood or prawns but dont be so dismissive of genuine issues...

You are generalising, how much bycatch us there with a Flathead net? How much by catch with a Garfish net? How much by catch with a Mullet beach haul? How much byproduct with your cast net? As I said many times, it's not a one size fits all problem! It's OK for you to dislike netters, trawlers and most other pros, that's your perogative and opinion, but, you need to not just make blanket statements.

What are you on about..?.I am not trying to cast moral judgement here on anyone that eats a prawn or a flattie..But anyone that tries to say that netting of almost any type wont create unintended bycatch is an idiot..I remember when the NSW Commercial fishos industry body kicked up a stink about new regulations to try and save mulloway in NSW years back...what an absolute bunch of selfish one eyed-wankers most pro's are.
