Hows the Woobligong /Wollongong Port Kembla area been Fishing of late ?? Anyone onboard been wetting a line in this region lately ??.
It's been a bit hit and miss, kind of between seasons, plenty of big Flathead for the drifters, those who know what they are doing are getting some Snapper, and a drifter on a charter got a Wahoo on the weekend, on a single suicide hook drifting for Flathead! The crabs are starting to go OK in Lake Illawarra, but Prawns have been near non existent for a few years now, and some good Whiting are starting to show up on the beaches, that's about it as far as my info goes.Originally Posted by Volvo

Even thought of towing the Boat down for awhile bring back memories over old stomping grounds.
How long has it been since you were last here? The whole area has changed heaps, like everywhere, some changes for the better, some not so much! Shellharbour Marina is well and truely finished, quite a few boats in there, and the entire area is shops, cafe's and eateries, and a very nice pub/tavern right on the water. Further out west past Dapto is well built out now, hardly any land left undeveloped. Wollongong Harbour has only a few Trawlers now, they all sold their licences and got out, even the families that had been in fishing for generations are gone. Land anywhere near the water has skyrocketed, I could never afford to buy where I live now if I hadn't been here all my life and bought the family home.
Been back a few times Mate due to rellies there and know whats been happening with the housing market etc..
If one had the Money and a wee bit of foresight the Parents acerage would still be close by over the hill , but living so far away and familly , easier said than done ey..

It is kind of, there's everything you need without that big city "vibe" if you get what I mean. Where I am, nearly every house has been pulled down and two units built on the big blocks, but the beach is mostly only a few people swimming, never crowded (except Australia Day) most boat ramps are "tolerable" except sunny weekends, then they get busy. Fishing and crabbing is good to excellent, and I live a couple of minutes from ocean boat ramps and about 5-10 minutes from crabbing ramps, so got everything covered.
I never really rated the place.I only go back out of a sense of duty as most of my relations live in the area.

The northern suburbs have never been appealing to me, anywhere past Port Kembla is kind of crowded and skinny poor roads that can't cope with the traffic on a good day.

Most roads are OK, but the northern suburbs are horrendous, simply because they can't widen it, especially up Thirroul way. They built a new freeway to bypass everything from North Wollongong to Thirroul, but, put lots of traffic lights on it, so even that is a traffic jam, but further north, the road is cut into the cliffs and it's near impossible to do anything and it's just a single lane street through suburbia with thousands of cars on it every day.
Just as a kind of add on to this, the state government and local council are spending 15m on repairing the rock wall on Warilla beach, not too sure how much government will get done for 15m, but time will tell. The rock/Seawall was built along in front of the beachside houses to stop them being washed into the ocean, which is a result of mining/removing/stealing the sand hills decades ago that were there before, like everything, what was a quick cash grab, has now turned into a never ending tax payers money pit.
