    Minkot and Lithium batteries

Was just reading something on the Minnkota site about lithium batteries and it says not to run your motor on a lithium above 85% as they were built with lead acid batteries its due to the lithium batteries high out put,i suppose it may over heat if run at 100%.

MinnKotas do overheat on any type of battery and cook the plastic brush holders if you run flat out for about 3/4 of an hour.
I have fried two of the brush holders on lead acid batteries.

That's a long time to go flat out. I ran a lithium for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Never got over 7, no issues on that trip. Still a few trips to see. What were you doing to burn out the brush holders? On one occasion I did run mine on an AGM at full speed for about 20 mins as the 2 stroker was out of action. Drained the battery as it had been going a few hrs already but no other issues.

I see, in the Passage if I need to go over 6 to maintain a slow forward movement I either give up and go home or try to find a spot where it doesn't run as much.

On another note, I was in the market for a Riptide Ulterra for the big boat, the next shipment won't land in Aust till at least December and even then they've already been sold.

Minn Kota went from absolutely no to Lithium batteries to a yeh it's ok - just dont run them flat chat for long periods

Been running on Lithiums for a few years now & there has been no issue ....... then again it would be a rare thing for me to run above an 8 on the leccy

Oh & I found it interesting that Minn Kota changed their position at around the same time that BLA started to sell their own branded LiFePO4 batteries here in OZ

We cooked a watersnake on lithium, wasn’t the motor it was the electronics in the head, took about 10 minutes or less on low speed, that’s a couple of years ago, don’t know if they have improved since then, but maybe just as well you didn’t go that way

No one should have concerns about using LiFePO4 batteries ...... it's proven technology - just as long as you buy reputable batteries .

    Affordability is the barrier .

And use them with reputable trolling motors, regardless of quality their all supplying around the same voltage, it’s apparent that some hardware just doesn’t cope, I’d be concerned if I kept cooking electronics.
