    Braid

Been looking to try some different braid on the new reel and have noticed that no matter we’re you look all the braid is about the same price no matter what the brand or meterage you look at I’m finding this very odd other than we are all getting ripped off.

Tasline, Tasline & Tasline. Pretty good value for a bloody decent braid if not one of the best out there.

My PE3 is still getting the job done 5 years on after spooling my Saltiga 4000 which gets used at least once a week.

Plus one for Tasline. Tried plenty of braids, most recently Nomad but nothing is as good as Tasline. Buy in bulk and you pay per metre. More you buy, cheaper it is.

Not a case of being ripped off (IMO)

Braids are not all the same - Dyneema vs Spectra

How the braid is constructed , how many picks , how it is treated , colour etc ...... along with the time taken to braid - finally the QC (consistency)

so much goes into it - it makes your head spin .

I don't believe that there is a good quality cheap braid on the market ..... most of the quality braids will be round , smooth & thin .

    Re: Braid

The 3 braids I'm using & have been using for the past 3-5 years are below

    for 300m of 30lb I typically pay

    Tasline ($80) , Nomad Panderra ($80 / 400m) , Majorcraft Dangan ($70)

*Tasline is the best all round braid - If it came in a depth indicating version it would probably be on all my reels - Gets used on most of my heavy outfits 40lb +
*Nomad Panderra is not far behind the Tasline - Comes in depth indicating so it ends up on most of my outfits
*Major Craft Dangan - Excellent quality , slightly cheaper , comes in depth indicating ...... great in lighter line classes .

I was using a fair bit of the Daiwa J Braid X8 but found that compared to above it didn't last as long & would go furry - then come apart.

I've tried plenty of other more budget braids such as Berkley 832 , Powerpro ,Suffix & Fins ...... yeh nah

Australian made braids (Australian Monofil) - Bionic , Platypus platinum / P8 are OK just tend to be on the thick side

More than happy to stick with the Tasline , Nomad & Majorcraft to cover all bases

    Re: Braid

I’m similar to you Chris using Tasline and Nomad. I have 30lb nomad panderra on a Catalina 4000 / grappler pe3 rod and I’m convinced it doesn’t cast as good as Tasline. Apart from that I like it but I haven’t been using it that long so can’t comment on longevity

    Re: Braid

Found some interesting info on braid Steve Morgan did a test on all the braid brands in Australia and did a test on 20lb braid on a strait pull some broke at 22 lb and a lot broke in the 30 lb and some in the 40lb and one brand broke at 53 lb now that’s interesting.

Yer Prymal brand Is a cheap brand but still at the same price point as other better brands.

And I think the dyneemia spectra thing was all work out on ausfish many moons ago ,one product split into 2 licenses one marketed as Dymeemia and one marketed spectra there both the same chemical.

Prymal is BCF's own brand, bought some 50 lb, went to put it on and thought it was a bit thick, got my 80lb JBraid and compared it with a micrometer and the Prymal was thicker.just use it as backing now.
I once tried bionic in 30lb but found it thicker than my 65lb braid. Complained to bionic direct and they said they had complaints their braid broke at not much more than advertised strength so they basically produced it to around 50lb to match other brands. They refunded my money as I wasn't interested in the thicker material.
And I hate it when the suppliers state "mono equivalent", it's like saying "average bloke", totally nonsensical.

There is more to it than licences

Both might be ultra high molecular weight polyethylene produced in a similar process ...... but Spectra & Dyneema can have quite different properties ( base materials & additives) . The fact is that most of the highly regarded braids available are based on Dyneema & produced in Japan .

    Re: Braid

The chain stores only stick to a certain price point and the importers try and price match other wise they don’t get average joe sales for guys who have no idea and just buy on price.
The local tackle stores then follow suit so they don’t miss out on sales

There is a greatly larger range of braid then we see on the shelves in Australia

I use suffix 832 for all the cod gear, it breaks at its rated breaking strain with a fg knot and handles the gritty sand encrusted river snags ok
As use j braid for the spin gear but it doesn’t last very long and frays and bleaches the colour out.

yiu can pay from $20 to $100 for 300 yards of braid so no they arnt all the same price if you buy overseas to get braids we don’t see here

The better tackle stores hold a decent range of braids - but you are right when it comes to the chain stores like BCF & Anaconda ....... their top of the range braids are really only middle of the road .
I rate the Nomad pretty highly ..... & at $70-80 a spool I consider it pricey - even though I know I can pay double that for one of the specialist Japanese jigging or casting braids from the likes of YGK & Varivas .
