Suzuki DF200AP Outboard

Hello.

What are your thoughts on the DF200AP Suzuki outboard for offshore work ?

What instrumentation setup Is ideal for this outboard?

Is ‘fly-by-wire’ beneficial and worth having on this motor?

I assume you're asking about the 4cyliner one? suzuki do a 4 and 6 cyl 200hp.



I owned a pair of 150AP's fly by wire on a noosacat. Exact same engine as the 200AP .
IMO suzuki make the best motor for long range offshore fishing boats. (honda close second)
nothing wrong with other brands at all, but if you were to be ultra picky and choose horses for courses you can. (eg mercury is a better engine if your chasing speed due to prop choices)

This is entirely due to the gear ratio's they use and lean burn control. (reliability etc is just as good among all engines today, anyone who tells you otherwise is ignorant)

most engines go on heavier fishing boats so the ability to spin bigger props is significantly helpful and get you the best fuel economy. suzuki seem to get slightly better economy than other engines if you compare apples to apples.
it may only mean 10% better economy, but every little bit counts when you do long range runs fishing

fly by wire is simply a luxury. Not needed but its bloody nice to have.

Just generally, on the subject of FBW, it IS really nice to have. I've been driving a mate's 2300 Caribbean a lot lately, 300hp Yamaha FBW, just a pleasure to use once you get used to the sensitivity compared to mechanical. I haven't driven it in any really bad conditions, on/off throttle stuff, that could take some adapting. How do they make it so they go into gear quietly on FBW vs the clunk of mechanical?? I see Suzuki offer FBW right down to 140hp now.

Hi Splash, yeh the DF200AP are great. I have just upgraded from a pair of the original DF175 (2013 models) to these and the difference is amazing. The FBW is great, so smooth. Not that the cable is bad, this is just better. I went with the Suzuki gauges and networked up to my Garmin MFD. the Bly downside of the Suzuki gauges is the inability to add fuel to the fuel meter. The only option is to reset to full. The Garmin overcomes this. If you always fill up, it isn’t an issue but I don’t.

Thank you guys - great responses. It’s helped a lot. Yes - it’s the 4 cylinder 2.9L block.

I would like to know more about which gauges to use for this outboard? Would appreciate further input from you good people.

SMG4 gauges are fine - Having 2 gauges gives you the scope to set up the information you want . Like running two sounders (one for Nav & one for Sounding)

I had a single multifunction gauge on my last Yammi - good gauge but you had to continually scroll through it .

All I’ve been told by BC is that only 1 x ORM guage will be supplied and installed with this motor…

That may be the standard inclusion - did you ask about other options ?
My boat has dual gauges & I've seen plenty of others with two

Talk to your dealer - they will give you the options open to you

I reckon a pair of MFG4s would suffice - then link your motor with your sounder

I would just go with a pair of the 4" gauges for a boat like yours
