These bearings are less than six months old,
Is there a better axle seal ? and that seal surface on the axle is rooted, has anyone used or could recommend speedi sleeves.
thanks in advance

There should also be a SS sleeve that the seal rubs against, don't see it in the photos. That surface is not that bad, clean it up and use rubber grease to put the seal on.
No ss sleeve to be found, thats why Im thinking of using speedi sleeve or similar
The SS sleeve is usually included in the kit especially if it is a marine version, I thing Who did the bearings previously.
bearings installed by a well regarded Melbourne based marine mechanic,
is the sleeve a part of the axle seal arrangement?, I dont think Ive ever seen such a thing, Off to bearing places tomorrow, will make enquiries
Polish your hub to a mirror finish…
Dig, that seal is different to mine which is a one piece with a spring garter, yours is the type im after if that is a two piece, is it a case of fitting the seal over the axle journal first?
Bait, I think the journal is too buggered given that Ive linished it already
Bob, wasn't aware of a spring loaded seal.
With the one I showed the SS sleeve is rammed into the hub, after you've installed the cone and bearing and the seal is slipped onto the axle then the hub installed.
Dig, so does the rubber seal fix to the axle and not spin and the metal cup which is fixed to hub spins around it? I understand if this makes no sense, but im thinking I could loctite the rubber seal to the axle journal.
Thanks Dig, thats what I was hoping for, if thats the case then it might not matter if the journal is ordinary and some sort of sealant between the seal and journal should keep water out.
I use sealant on mine, I let it sit for 24 hours before spinning the wheel to let the sealant set
I also use sealant on the outer dust caps, you just have to make sure the mating surfaces are very clean
I haven't had bearing problems since doing it this way, my last boat was ten years on the same bearings, current one is four
It works for me
Just a bit of background to how I arrived at this scenario,
couple days ago we fished off Philip Island Vic, its all kingfish and southern bluefin tuna at the moment, and for southerners thats big news cause the rest of the year can be ordinary, so after driving the boat/trailer up off the ramp at Hastings Vic I heard brake pad noises from kerb side wheel that required some brake stamping to set right, next day I pulled the hydraulic caliper off the kerb side wheel to inspect and lubricate, spun the hub which made a slightly horrible noise, when I removed the dust cap (the type with yellow grommet) water fell out, so there was no option but to whip the whole hub out and inspect, glad I did those races are buggered, got to get that side done first cause I cant get to other side until the wheel is back on.
Boats going nowhere the way it is!............did I mention Its tuna time in Vic
