Thread: dynema winch cable

    dynema winch cable

The steel cable on my 712 powerwinch needs replacing, so wondering if it's ok to use dynema now. It looks like there is a steel plat that rests across the top of the cable, not sure if that's ok?

I replaced the steel cable on my powerwinch..about ten years ago..and its been fine...not sure if its what your referring to but I removed that steel plate.I used a fairly thick braided dyneema maybe half inch, and spliced the hook .The only thing to watch is coils overlapping on the initial couple of tightenings. It may be more of an issue if you retrieve full boat length.I tend to drive on and use the winch for the last metre or two.....

    cheers for the quick reply,
yeah, that plate looks like it stops the steel cable from unravelling when there is no tension, so might rip it off also. i think i can probably get away with 5mm(1700kg) rope, as i'm only retrieving a 5m quintrex Seebreeze!

Should be standard on all boat winches. If buying a pre spliced one from a chandlery I recommend re doing the splice or locking it with some string. All the ones I store bought failed under tension from the splice slipping.

Yes might failed the first time I used it where it is spliced to the eye. Tied a locked half blood knot and have never had it break again.

did the same after one broke ..... worked fine for years to come .

My tip would be always go the heavy option though

If you havent already purchased etc....I would urge you to use a larger diameter braid ...They are slippery as all get out when new ..and as the pressure comes on the drum the line is pulled down into the inner unless it is very tightly wound on to start.Very hard to extract as it all tightens up!

i'll take you advice and go to the larger and longer rope, hopefully it all will fit onto the the spool. cheers

When I changed mine over - I winched the dyneema onto the drum .
Once the rope was connected to the winch - I connected the hook to the car - tightened the rope & wound the trailer towards the car under pressure level winding the rope onto the drum . you need to do this on a flat surface but it worked well & there certainly was plenty of room .
