Thread: Anchor Knot?

    Anchor Knot?

    Hi all,

Ran into some issues last weekend where my anchor rope got jammed in my Anchor winch. It’s basically jammed between the ‘barrel’ and the U-shaped bracket that holds the barrel on.

The anchor winch is a ‘Stress Free Anchor’

I think my only courses of action are to either:

    1. Remove the whole winch unit from the boat, so that I can remove the ‘pin’ that holds the barrel on. That way it’ll let me free the rope up that is jammed.

    2. Cut the anchor rope from the chain and ‘back it out’. This means that I’ll have to tie an ‘anchor knot’ to the chain. Will this be strong enough?

Open to any and all suggestions/comments. I’ll try and upload a photo tomorrow when I’m back in front of the boat.

    Cheers.

Tie the rope to the chain it will be plenty strong enough, or splice a loop in the end (plenty of splicing videos around) not exactly sure what your issue is from your description.

Thanks Noelm. I guess what I’m asking is tying a knot gonna be ok, or should to avoid cutting the rope (and therefore remove the winch - which is a whole lot of work)?

What sort of rope? I seen plenty of rope spliced together. If braid that’s a different story.

Millions of anchors are just tied on, a decent knot will be fine, does it have to go through some kind of guide?

A knot is ok short term but a splice around a thimble for chafe protection is the optimum. What type of anchor line is it?

I had a similar position, twice, fortunately just put it into free spool, got a big screwdriver and hammer and knocked the chain free. I did try putting some brackets in to prevent it happening again but have since removed it.

Splices are fairly quick and easy to do even in braids....far less bulky than knots as well.

    Re: Anchor Knot?

Being a Stress Free winch the last 8 or 10 metres metres of rope would be 3 core nylon which is a breeze to splice, the double core braid they use for the main anchor rode is double plaited and is an absolute pain to do even with the right tools especially in the smaller diameters. I did find a youtube that showed me an alternative way of doing it which worked for me but unfortunately didn't save the link to it.
