    Cannon Electric Downrigger

Hi all, my old cannon manual downrigger (unitroll) has bit the dust after 15 years of solid service and hard knocks, i'm considering going electric in cannon magnum 10. As far as i can determine from some reading the rigger has to be loaded with the traditional wire cable in order to make the "out up" function to work. Was hoping to hear from someone with some 1st hand experience with the cannon electrics and confirm this is is fact the case as i've always preferred to run 200 pound braid as my downrigger cable. Hardly worth the while going electric if auto up isn't going to work!!

Gazza, yep, thats the other option, was hoping to stay with cannon given my current mounting platform etc fits the electric so it all just works, apart from the bloody wire cable!!! I did see the scotty's have like a mechanical stop so i can use braid with those. Also considering just going another armstrong manual unitroll and same some coin. There used to be a few boutique brands in electric downrigger, seem slike cannon and scotty have it cornered in Aus these days in the electric market anyway.

Yeah Cannon and Scotty were the first two big brands to kick off downriggers in Australia a few years after the market started flooding with immitations from China

How deep are u going? I have been down around 20 meters and the lake troll is a bit to wind up so i usually dont go that deep but electric is fancy stuff especially if the weight automatically stops at the top, its hard to use a manual DR fishing solo

I've got one of each - a manual and a digitroll 10. Electric is shiteloads better. There is specific mention in the manual that the short stop feature doesn't work if loaded with mono or braid so I've never tried. There is an insulator that gets installed in the cable above the weight. When the insulator breaks the surface and therefore the circuit, the weight stops.

I have a cannon electric downrigger and it has been faultless for the past 6 years. Working depths 25-65 metres. Was contemplating changing wire to braid but will leave to retain auto rewind and short stop feature. SS

Thanks everyone, Scottar, Sea Strength, Nagg, have any of you used any of the tricks on the internet to reduce the wire cable hum, i see some people put a short length of nylon to the bomb, also some talk about a cork with a hole in it running freely on the cable, anyone used any of these ideas? My current unitroll used to hum like allot with the original wire on it before it got the better of me and i went braid?

    Thanks all

Bought a boat with a big block E-tec............can't hear it. Works on the same principle as a stereo in a car . Current boat being glass doesn't transmit the sound as much as the old can did.

Since we need to downrig in the direction of the tide flow try chuck a sea anchor out to slow the boat down

I have downrigged from a 3.75 meter tinny in open waters using a Attwood Clamp on downrigger and it didn't humm
