    Bearing / trailer repair kit

OK - staying on track with bearings / trailers etc

Who carries spares with them ? - What do you have in your travel kit ?

As a serial long distance tower of boats - I've come to learn (often the hard way ) you need to be prepared for eventualities .
I'm about to repack / reorganise tools spares & consumables for my next big trip - so I'm interested to hear what some of you guys carry

I'll go through some of my stuff along the way but I'm sure this will be helpful for anyone who does those big towing trips

Re: Bearing / trailer repair kit

My cat trailer has a spare wheel carrier, complete with a disc hub and bearings, with some simple tools, it's pretty easy to swap a complete hub, the tinny, I take nothing......

One thing I do take when doing longer trips, is a cordless rattle gun, and a small set of sockets, makes life so much easier doing "stuff"

Based on about 25 years of long range towing - Those inland Hwys in Qld can be murder so I generally carry the following spares

2 sets of bearing & seals / split pins / washer
    2 spare bearing buddies
    2 bearing caps
    Tub of grease
    Grease gun
    Amalgamating silicon tape
    1 can degreaser
    Rags (not enough)
    Nitrile gloves
    Roll of cloth gaffa tape
    Wet & dry sandpaper (200 & 600 grit)

1 set of wheel studs / nuts - I've once sheared off my wheel studs ... lost the wheel

    1 set U bolts / nuts & plate for springs - I 've broken U bolts previously
1 set U bolts for winch post - I 've broken U bolts previously
1 set of U bolts for the sping hanger - I 've broken U bolts previously
    Tools

    Bottle Jack
    Various ring spanners
    socket set
    Screw drivers
    Hammer
    Drift set (new addition)
    pliers
    side cutters
    small crow bar
Drifts / screw driver - knocking out bearing races
    Wheel brace
    Head lamp & battery lantern
    Other

2 200X200X50mm blocks of wood these go under the jack to raise the height & offer a stable base
Towel - old thick beach towel to lay on if working on trailer failure / bearing

I'm thinking about buying a spare hub (non braked)

It's been a big plus having a trundle tray & side storage on the tray making life a lot easier to carry spares ( I used to fill a 80lt tote box)

Re: Bearing / trailer repair kit

Depends on what type of trip it is. We do some really long trips, some are just highway trips, others to the likes of Roper River mouth. The last Roper trip, we left from Cooma, there was a considerable amount of highway, then the dirt road stuff.
Spares for that trip included bearings, hubs, wheel studs, springs and plates to drill and bolt to the trailer if needed, plus the battery tools required to do it. The trailer runs the same bolt pattern as the Cruiser, so wheels are interchangeable, but if I have to put the Cruiser wheels on the trailer I need to remove the mudguard, which is the better of evils if it comes to that.
For normal highway driving I just carry bearings, hubs and wheel studs, cause they're always in our camper on the back of the Cruiser.

We're in the process of looking at building a new trailer, one of the things that I am going to incorporate into it is a fixed leg that swings down like a jockey wheel so that when a tyre needs to be lifted, you just lower it, drive backward a bit and it swings and lifts the trailer high enough to elevate the tyre for changing. I used to have the half moon type that goes on the axle, but if you happen to break the wheel studs and a tyre comes off, there isn't enough room for it, or a jack without digging a hole (ask me how I know that)

Then there's a myriad of other things we do with the trailer to set it up for long distance.
    Cheers
    Corry

Nagg what do you keep the Amalgamating tape for?

Not sure what Nagg uses it for but I run it around the bearing buddies and the hub once completed. 2 things, they won't come out even on the roughest roads and also stops people knocking them off. The tape needs to be cut off when servicing but it is such a small price to pay.

I also carry a lot of what Nagg carries even for shorter trips. All of mine fits into 2 chicken trays which can stack on top of one another, each tray must weigh 25 kgs

Re: Bearing / trailer repair kit

Crossing the Nullarbor and back, I carried:

    - Spare wheel on hub (brand new tyres all round)
    - 2x bearing sets complete
    - 2x spare screw-on caps
    - Tub of grease
    - Mini grease gun
    - Bag o' rags
    - Gloves
    - Spare set of studs and nuts
    - Car screw jack + some short lengths of hardwood + ply squares for height adjustment (hardwood doubles as hammer)
    - Ring spanners
    - Socket set
    - Screwdriver set
    - Drill driver w/ screw + socket adapters
    - Leatherman multitool
    - Vise grips
    - Wheel brace
    - Head lamp
    - Tube of KneadIt putty

The KneadIt saved me years back on a trip up to Karijini National Park. Toasted the bearings, scored the axle and would have just leaked grease past the inner seal had I not been able to patch it with KneadIt. Let it set off for 10 minutes then filed it down using the Leatherman file. Also patched a crack in the petrol tank. Made it 1400km home on those repairs, and have kept a tube of KneadIt in the glovebox of all our cars ever since.

Re: Bearing / trailer repair kit

Everyone seems to be on the money with their spares. I carry a similar set but I have a habit of "just throwing in a couple extra". Then last year before a big trip with the camper when weight mattered I thought I would actually check.

This is what I removed leaving 2 full sets of bearings seals etc.

Also for newbies, the screwdrivers you want are the ones where the shaft goes right through the handle and end with a mushroom head so that you can apply a hammer to them, The cheap ones just break with any force applied.

I have a box which contains the following:
    Trolley jack
Spare bearings - Holden and Ford
    Grease
    Rags
    Hammer
    Wire brush
    Ground down bearing races
    Screwdrivers
    Spanners
    Shifters

Probably some more bits and pieces I've forgotten.
