Thread: Raymarine Electronics

Pretty straight forward Trev and a definite case for nylon line and compression fittings as it will do away with any excess length - I could only see the prefab ones in a minimum of 2 feet. I'll grab a photo of mine tomorrow and post up to give you an idea.

Trev, I'd also like to see some of those electrical joints over sleeved with some double walled heatshrink.

The silver fittings are the original Seastar ones with the pilot steering lines connected. These use an olive to seal and an internal spigot to stop the line crushing. The tees are a 3 way female 1/4 NPT, the fittings between the helm and the tees are 1/4 NPT male-male, the fittings that the original Seastar hoses attach to are 1/4NPT male to 3/8 compression straight. The balance line has a 1/4NPT male-female spacer to allow the 1/4NPT to 3/8 compression elbow to be rotated or it contacts the helm before it comes tight. You will also need three fittings to screw into the pump if they aren't included - 3/8 compression to whatever thread is required to screw in (the two common types are 1/4NPT or 1/4BSP). Do not use thread tape. Grab a tube of high pressure pipe sealant.

My pump is mounted in the side pocket area on the cabin bulkhead. The best spot for yours would be on the bottom of the helm locker - gives the best pump orientation for bleeding. Next best would be towards the bottom on the inboard side wall. When mounting on a vertical wall, the electrical motor should be mounted up. This does create a potential for air locks (these can be dealt with) but it prevents any oil that may get past the seal on the pump shaft destroying the electric motor. Some manufacturers do recommend mounting the pump the other way - minimizes calls about air locks and IMO they don't care about longevity - just has to get past the warranty period.
