    Recharging flat batteries.

Ok I havent had the boat out in a month but have played around with the marks on the sounder a couple of times and I have left the battery switch on 1+2 and flattened them.

Yep a right doofus for sure but I hope I havent destroyed them.

To put the charger on should I just turn the battery switch off and put the clips on each of the 2 batteries one at a time or remove the battery terminal lugs before putting the clips on...Does it matter and whats the best way to go about it...?

    Been there made thatmistake [emoji1787]

Id do them disconnected/ separately and check them again in a few days to make sure theyre still holding full charge!

As long as they are truly wired with a single positive from each battery to the switch and isolated when the switch is off (from everything) then I'd switch off and charge individually.

mate do you mean that switch works properly as 1, 2 or 1+2 or both off....if so then yes, it works as intended..

I'll have a crack at them with my solar charger and panel tomorrow..

Sweet. Some people think they have isolators but have never checked the wiring to confirm. Don't want to find out the hard way that its wired wrong!

What is likely to happen in that case..?

I usually switch off completely. My battery boxes have anderson plugs on them for both charging, electric reel connections, pie warmers etc.
I guess the other issue is what drained the batteries, something would have been running to do that.

Best one I've seen was that the outboard and both batteries all fed off the one terminal post on the switch. Turning the switch didn't do a damn thing!

Disorderly, the answer to your original questions is to turn the switch off, if you don't trust the wiring get a multimeter and just check to see if you're getting current past the switch. Nothing will happen to your motor. The thing is what caused the discharge, I've left my switches on for a couple of weeks and haven't lost any power.

Disorderly. Did the flat batteries take charge from the chargers?

Sam I'm the king of flattening batteries ..I have also done both vehicles in the past month .I always seem to leave something on with the key one click on...

I have a real knack for it unfortunately...

    Re: Recharging flat batteries.

Depending on how the switch is setup ....your default battery switch position should not be 1+2.

If using boat for fishing or if using gps at home etc, battery should normally 1 OR 2, not both.

A common setup includes a voltage relay so both batteries still get charged by motor, even if battery is in 1, or 2.

1+2 should only be used if a problem, eg flat battery, motor wont start, etc.

You might have to hook them up, one at a time, to a fully charged battery (in parallel) for 5-10 Minutes to get them percolating a bit first.
Either that or a 240V charger with a bit of grunt.

    You may be right..

I need to get my boat out of the shed to charge with solar..
But with 1700mm of rain in the past 4 weeks and dark skies again today ..I will see what tomorrow brings..
Just trying to move the boat ATM will make muddy wheel ruts..

    I dont have a 240v -12v charger...might have to look into that.

    Any suggestions..?
