Northern NSW - Best months for fishing

    Hi All

OK here is the deal - I'm looking to book a trip (house) at Evans Head for next year .

I'm now pretty familiar with the place & have had success during the months of Feb & May - fishing was darn good to be precise .

My dilemma is - which month would be the best overall but I'm limiting the selection to March , April or May . April probably will be avoided because of School Holidays ( there is a small window though)

What fish are available - which months are more settled...….. any other advantages of one month over the other. (Offshore fishing - predominantly)

Keen to hear your thoughts to help me choose

    Cheers

    Chris

Gday Nagg - I live in Maclean and fish alot of the northern grounds (sth evans ) area. Personally I would probably look at May - I try and take annual leave for the month of May most years as the weather seems to be a little more predictable, school is back in session and you get a good mix of better mackeral - both spots and spanish and the snapper and trag start to thicken up on the shallow ground. We have also found a good run of cobia as the whale migration starts to come into play around May with the first pilot whales heading north.
Having said that I took the whole month of May off last year and only got out 4 times. 2018 I made 19 trips to sea in 25 days - go figure....
Good luck with your trip it is certainly a lovely part of the world.
    Cheers,
    Troy

    Thanks Troy

I did a week in May 2017 & again in 2018 ….. I cancelled May last year because of the weather .

I agree - the spotties were pretty good both times & managed some cobia incl a 1.3m beast ….. so yeh , May looks good from my own experiences …… I just don't know if I can hang out that long

I spent 10 days there in Feb …. when the seas were up due to the Cyclone - the fishing in close was pretty crappy because of all the fresh from the floods - still managed some very good fish out wider though .

    Love the place

Anytime you can get out is a good time - think I remember seeing some of your shots and commenting on the lovely coloured water at time - that beautiful cloudy brown colour!!
Good luck with your booking and hope the weather gods play nice for you!!

Trying to plan around the weather is at best a lucky dip, especially as you go North, mid year is usually the best weather, but the fishing is better earlier on in the year, just book and hope is my motto. I haven't fish there a lot but my brother in law lives at Casino and goes to Evans quite a bit and he nearly always gets fish (and he is definitely a "tourist" fisherman) it takes a bit of getting used to him calling Teraglin "trag jew" as the locals call them.
